  • Noise when engine start

    Hi guys,

I have my 05 2.0 TDI timing belt changed recently, after few days I noticed that it has some 'rattle/scratchy' noise after the engin is started in the morning(check video below around the 4th second).

BTW, after the timing belt work, I actually feel the car has less rattle, (because of new tentionser ?) however it is back to 'normal' after a week, is this normal?

I love my tdi, hopefully it it can be fixed properly and keep drive it for few more years!

    Hi ttk.
How did you go with this prob. It's difficult to say from afar...but do you think the noise could be coming from starter not disengaging after start? Mk4's have a common problem with this and I have just rebuilt/re-greased my sister's Mk4 starter that was making very similar noise. It is predominantly a problem in the colder areas and months.

it sounds more like to twin mass flywheel rattling, also a issue with this model / make/ year. The starter motor noise usually only happens as the engine turns over then about 1 second after its started. your noise runs on for longer and doesn't start until its running, I would think it would be the flywheel, expensive but if you can put up with the noise it shouldn't cause you any issues other than the sound. get someone to put it on a hoist and they should hear the noise coming from the gearbox bell housing if its the flywheel....
