Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

8l/100kms is combined city/freeway driving , on a rolling road and not realistic. It's obtainable , but not for anyone that lives near the city !

My 06 gti manual has a overall average of 10l/100kms , current tank is 15/100 ! Lots of stop start and hooning lol. But on a recent trip to Melbourne I was touching high 5's after a couple of tanks of constant low rpm load.

It can also be way out by how you have been driving just before you fill up.
If I fill up at the end of the Newcastle Sydney freeway after the big dipper
the display will indicate I have 1200+km till empty but if Im around town and
fill I normally get around anything from 900-1000km

So have you changed were you have been filling up lately or coming from a different direction.

      jetta tdi
Im calculating the consumption at the bowser the trip computer is giving similar figures.

I have only recently bought the car so can only really compare to the WRX. I am filling up at the same places but now using 98RON rather than 95. Also similar types of driving work is 10km away, of which 8km is freeway.

I expect it to use a bit more juice than the listed in the city but an extra 4L is a lot. The WRX used a extra 2.

Currently Im looking at figures like this..

WRX on 95RON 10L for highway driving & 12L city.
Golf on 98RON 8L for highway driving $ 12L city.

Something isn't right, if I can find any faults the dealer will fix them in the first 3 months so might have to get it checked by someone who knows these cars. Is there anything I can check myself?

Mix of freeway, rural roads (anywhere between 80-100kph) and urban (varies inner city to suburban).

        Long term average (over 6000km) --> 7.6L/100km.
Gone: 2009 MkV GTI DSG United Grey; 2005 MkV Comfortline

        Current Rides: 2020 Mk7.5 GTI Performance ; 2013 MY14 V6 Touareg 180TDI

          Hi,
I think if you drive a performance car you need to forget the fuel consumption and drive it for what it was designed for. If you want to pussy around to get better better consumption - just sell it and get a 2.0TDI golf - I get 950 k per tank - and it will still do 200 if so needed.

          cheers

Yeh I agree I like diesel obviously isn't as quick as the GTI, was driving on the highway today and getting 4.5l per 100 for some of the time but usually around 5.5. I told a friend the other day who has a WRX and he was surprised, but I guess it's what people prefer.

I wouldn't say its obvious at all - I've had a number of traffic light races with other Gti's and there's nothing in it between us- If anything I'd say I've been in front more.

                Agree with Potya.
Driver also makes a huge difference to how fast a car can go.

Seen many Porsche 911s and Ferraris being beat by much slower cars at track days.

i know a little off topic given this was a fuel consumption thread..haha.

That's because traffic lights grand prix is usually to low speeds, the low torque delivery of a diesel will easily beat a gti off the line, but once the gti has had a chance to hit 3rd it will sail past.

At least thats what ive experienced jumping inbetween my gti and my parents 103tdi, maybe the gap is shortened with a gtd..
