  • MKV GTI whine

    Hi,

Lately my MY09 GTI DSG with approximately 45,000 km has started to develop a faint whine when the car has been driven for a while. It usually happens after some highway driving when I take my foot of the throttle but not exclusively. It seems to be driving fine with no boost leak.

Any suggestions as what this could be?

    Thanks in advance.

    MKV GTI whine

Could possibly be your water pump some are know to develop a squeal. No problem with operation and no danger at all. If you have wty go to a dealer may possibly replace if this is the case.

Mine just developed the dreaded PCV squeal. Only happens after it has been running for over and hour and does not squeal under boost. It is audible at idle and can be killed by opening the dipstick tube.

Annoying and embarrassing is what it is! Your symptoms sound similar to mine and our vehicle age/km is similar also.

        Hi kahle81
My MY08 Mk5 GTI DSG with similar km has been making a slight whine as you describe for some years. I've reported it several times to a couple of dealerships in Sydney, and have been advised each time that all is OK. To me, it seems engine speed related and audible both under load and when backing off, eg downshifting when the revs rise. It's not noticeable at idle in my car.
I suspect it may be related to the auxiliary drive belt, such as the water pump as suggested by grtuned above. As there does not appear to be any loss in performance or economy, I almost accept it as normal, other than being a little annoying.

Incidentally, the PCV in my car was recently replaced - the squeal the old PCV started to make at idle was very different and much louder. The only similarity was this too only occurred after the engine was warm, but stopped as soon as the engine was revved (as noted by Tom87).

Hi there was pretty sure you asked me about this yesterday??? that right?? let me know before i order mate
            Cheers
            Also need vin
ps this is not a drive belt, look at it like a balloon full of air, as a kid we all did it, fill the ballon and let the air out slowly and hear the squeeling noise, thats the same as the pin hole in the PCV valve, on boost and off of course itll be different, pressure in the crankcase is different.
As with DubDUB37, ive had a car recently thats been somewhere not named and they fitted the tensioner, 2 belts and still the same and gave up. Happens more with load like up hill or air con on?? clutch pulley on the alternator goes real bad and causes this
            Good luck all

Sorry, by 'I will replace' I of course meant - Jmac will replace.

I sent you a PM with my VIN so you can order the right PCV.

              Cheers
