HELP! Boot Not Closing

Hey guys. my night has just turned to crap. Was taking photos of the car tonight and when I was unloading my photo gear off the boot, I foolishly didn't see that there was a cable still hanging over the boot. When I shut the boot, the cable went straight into the boot locking mechanism.

I ended up cutting the cable (wasn't a big deal). But now the boot locking mechanism doesn't work properly, it seems to have lost it's spring/tension. When you close the boot, you can easily open it again without using the boot release. It won't lock.

Is this something I can fix myself or will it need a trip to the mechanic? Will any mechanic be able to take a look and fix it up or do I need to go to a VW specialist?

How handy are you with DIYs and mechanical troubleshooting? VW will just say replace the mechanism, so if you are half decent with tools, you may as well do it yourself and save a few bucks.
