Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Are these issues or not ?

    1) When I turned my key starting the car, have to release my finger at the right time, if I still keep on turning the key 1 or 2 seconds after the car already started, i'll hear a jerking noise, this harding happen to my other cars unless I really keep on twisting the key for a long time, looks like the GTI starter is very sensitive, is this normal ???

    2) I found out my garage floor around the exhaust area got some greyish dirty dots, looks like when on cold start, there're condensation spitting out from the exhaust, but how come they are greyish color, is this normal ???

    3) sometime if I stopped my car to standing still very quick, right at the moment the car stopped, I can feel a little "kick down" from the gear which normally you wpn't fell that while accelarating, is this like gear and clutch disengaged ??? again is this normal ???

Hope you understand what I'm talking about and my car has done only 300km ...

I'm sure you will get some great advice from the team shortly.
Sounds like you have the DSG.
When I start mine I get a slight movement as it seems to want to go in
reverse. This is only when on a level surface with handbrake off.
next time you try and start ,keep your hand brake on and foot on brake
and see if this stops what you have described.
Are you sure its a jerking noise or just trying to move in gear slightly.

Wouldnt think it a good idea turning the key 1-2 sec after starting.

yes, i have the DSG, but this engage or disengage sound only comes when i'm stopping right at the moment the car comes from slowing down to a complete standing still, nothing i can feel when the car start rolling from stop, of course it'll roll back a bit before it moves forward, this point i know ...

I mean the jerking noise is from the starter, not the engine or gear box, sorry maybe i can't explain myself too good, i know if you keep on turning the key after the car starts, you'll get this noise, but i'm very precise already somettimes, but still every 10 times, i'll still get this kind of noise, very light and mild, that's why I don't know if this is really the gear, or engine or whatever noise coming out from.

sorry with all these stupid and hard to understand questions, coz this is ever my first German car and I only driven Jap car ever before, maybe these are features and i thought they are faults ...

I have an Isuzu rodeo and you have to turn the key and wait longer
compared to my VW. so you may just be used to a Japanese car.
Check back later and someone will answer a few more of your questions.

Never had any problems on this, i guess turn it until the engine kicks over then stop?

Probably just a mixture of dust and condensation, wouldnt worry about it.

If you come to stop quickly DSG will still attempt to match the rpm drop and slot down through the gears as quick as it can so I assume its just a quick down change made by the mechatronics unit. Im not sure how quickly DSG's fuzzy logic picks up driving habits so perhaps yours is still learning after 300kms

Dont expect this to be the last "funny clunk" out of your DSG either

If you don't release the key when the engine starts, the starter motor pinion will remain in mesh with the flywheel. The engine then will start driving the starter motor, this is probably the noise you can hear and this is the case for all engines not just VW. Given that the starter pinion has only a few teeth and the the flywheel has many, the starter will then spin at many times engine revs and potentially damage the starter. You should always release the key as soon as the engine fires.

I had a car many years ago that the starter motor malfuntioned on, it stayed in mesh when the engine started, being young and foolish and the car being a V8 with dual exhausts, my habit was to start the engine and give it a big rev just to impress (or annoy) the neighbours. The poor starter motor was spun at many thousands of revs and the internal components literally disintegrated.

Yes, absolutely normal, just a bit of exhaust soot mixed with the water and being ejected from the exhaust as you start the car.

Sounds like you have DSG. This is normal, remember the DSG is a computer controlled manual gearbox, the gearbox goes down through the gearsas you slow the car. It is just the gearbox engaging first gear.
