Door Lock Safe Mode

Hi All

Put my car in for a 75K service and VW tell me that the passenger side door lock has reported that it is in 'Safe Mode' and that I will need to replace the locking mechanism as it is about to fail. They quoted $574 to replace it, as it is now out of warranty. Seems expensive, however it concerns me as I've heard that when it fails it can be hard to replace?

Does anyone know what actually triggers a door lock safe mode error code? The door lock is currently working fine and I suspect that it may just be because passengers riding in the car have trouble opening the door due to the double action required to first unlock and then open the door.

Do your doors auto lock at about 10kph.

If so I would just disable it not to lock.

My father nearly died because of this type of locking.


He got hit rather hard and rescuers couldnt get doors open because of auto locking.

He was unconscious and was unable to unlock car from inside.

They had to smash the windows to get at him.

On any cars I have owned this feature???? has immediately been disabled.

Rather risk a carjacking than be fried if the worst happens.

Got the V-Checker out and read the following two codes on the passenger door:

00097 Front Passenger Central Locking (Safe) Motor - V162
00929 Locking Unit for CL Pass Side - F221

Any ideas what this means? Should I try clearing them and see if they come back?

go to a wrecker and pick up a mechanism for $85??(i reckon thats what we paid) and replace it yourself, takes about 30-45mins coz you have to take the skin off the door, but a pretty easy thing to do yourself. as long as you have the tech screw set VW uses as theres like 5 different sizes on the door skin. but i have no idea what the cods mean, at least it hasn't completely locked up on you yet. then its a pain.

They are probably supposed to and were on Dads car which was a Toyota Crown

Unfortunately it got hit where the controller apparently was and they didnt open.

Im not prepared to risk it.

My Passat has it but I have turned it off Not really any need for it as I dont have kids and rarely drive in the city.

All doors should unlock, engine stall and interior lights and hazards turn on in the event of an accident. The only probable cause for a door not to open is if its been damaged by the accident. The auto lock/unlock not associated at all with this concern. If there's a problem with locking door lock or convenience system need checks.

The last time Toyota sold Crowns in Australia was late '70s/ early '90s wasn't it? (or did your incident happen more recently in another country?)

Was in NZ and was a few years ago. Whilst technology has improved I would not entirely trust something like that just in case it all went pear shaped
