Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Fuel Gauge stuck

I went down to Thiroul today , and went down Buli pass , on the way back and returning up the Pass i noticed that the Fuel gauge had stuck on empty,as there was no where to stop i had to keep going till i reached Campbelltown where i came to a red light ,so i switched the car off and back on and the gauge worked again,
Could the fuel sloshing around in the tank ,going around sharp corners caused this to happen ,the car was at the time 3/4 full??

I would say a diagnostic scan may show a fault with the gauge.

If it were my car, I would just keep an eye on it for now.

Looks like the sender unit is sticking.

How old is it, and what fuel is it (petrol or diesel)?

It is either mechanical, electrical, or a combination of both.

The exact same thing happened to a mate of mine in his MY08 Petrol GT Sport, after we were driving fast along a bumpy country road. He has the Kufatec E-MFA which digitally shows the fuel in liters and that was reading wrong as well. We restarted the car and it hasn't had an issue since (been about a month). My guess is that bumpy roads freak it out now and then and the Car ignores its results until restart.

I've had the MFD "freeze" twice in the last year. Even the clock froze. No big deal. Just leave the car off for a few minutes, and it fixes itself. (Even the right time) Seems to be some sort of "refresh" issue.

That's what happens with computers. In the early days of the PC, there was the "big red switch" rule. For those who don't know, the early PC's had a big red "duck bill" switch to power down and then power back up. None of that Start button rubbish or even windows

It's sad to say, I'm from that era...

And it hasn't changed much in 26 years. It's just a VMware restart now, or an iLo "power reset" procedure...
