Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Service sticker shock!

    Hi all,

Booked my 2006 Jetta TDI in for its 105k service today and was told it will cost $1665. I came here looking for alternatives.

    Cheers from Byron Bay.

    Welcome to the forums!
The alternatives would be the independent VW specialists. Try Camden GTI
    Performance Tunes from $850
    Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link

Camden isn't exactly convenient for me. I'm in Byron Bay, about 45mins south of the NSW-Qld border. I'll happily travel to the Gold Coast and even Brisbane to get it serviced.

The dealer I usually take it to on the Gold Coast tells me it needs timing belt and water pump replaced at 105,000 kms, but $1,665 seems a tad excessive to say the least. I've seen people vouch for V A Garage at Southport on these forums. Are there any other alternatives?

Sounds a little high to me.

~$400 for the service (oil and filter)
~$400 for the timing belt kit, water pump, and coolant.
~4 hours labour at whatever the labour rate is (Probably over $100/hr).

            Hi Jmac,

I don't mind driving up from Byron for the day. I don't have many options. I've got to got at least as far as Southport (V A Garage), so another hour won't kill me. Can I call you on today (Thursday) after 9am to get a price?
