Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 05 GTI rear sensors

    Guys
Any good? VW advised me their aftermarket sensors are fantastic - not that they would say anything bad about products they sell! I was thinking of getting them only because of the non painted bottom half of the bumper. If the wife dents that bumper I would hate to think of the repair costs which is the only reason I would consider it. Anyone have them? Are they big ugly sensors or worthwhile getting?
    cheers
    maestro.

i've got them on mine, they are coloured coded and sit on the upper section of the rear bumper, the bit that is colored. 4 small round sensors, that are fairly unnoticeable.

I got them too for my wife and i think it's a good investment. Only thing i found with them is that they are not as sensitive as the ones on my 4wd. i'm not sure if you can adjust the sesitivity on them though.

ask the dealer to show you some in action and you can get a better idea of exactly what you'll be getting.

I have the same ones as Dooby and it's great, it shows the distance to impact in a digital readout above the rear vision mirror. Certainly worth it.

Thanks guys for that info. With the sensors are they big and ugly? I haven't gone in to check them out as yet. Whats better - on the paint or on the bottom plastic of the bumper to install? Also on the bottom side do they match the non painted finish? And on the top do they match the paint or is it as close as you can get it to match?

they are about the size of 5c piece each. Each is coloured coded to the your cars colour exactly (saying that you can obviously still see them). i'm not sure they'll be able to match the non painted section. For me it looked the most logical to have them on the painted section just above the join where the two sections meet.

Hey dooby/boost are they the haodi sensors that vw put in? Id imagine all dealers would use the same product/installers. Do you have any pics? I did see the sensors on display and visited their website. I noticed they had 2 sizes. I am thinking the ones I saw were the bigger ones and hope the smaller ones get fitted on the golf as its a smaller car. My father in law has those sensors on his fairmont which look rather large for that car. If you guys have any pics of them on your cars or anyone else that would be great. ive failed to see any with these on the road or at the dealer so far on an actual car.
            thx.

You may be able to see my front sensors in this pic. The rear ones are exactly the same size, and I insisted on the front and rear ones, due to the usefulness with my Odyssey. Good investment - get 'em!

Can these be retrofitted to ... say ... a Polo? (I'm thinking of my wife ... see how considerate I am? )

Why do you think I had it fitted to two of my cars?? I reckon it can though, because they are generic aftermarket items, but fitted at a VW dealer, not that their supervision is much chop anyway (read my MFD Thread!). My Honda's were actually sent off to the guy who fits them, before delivery, rather than fitted at the dealer, so I don't think there'll be much danger there. But there's always that issue of the dreaded CAN-BUS (cue scary music!)

We had the parking sensors retrofitted on a Comfortline by a VW dealer.
Very neat job and paint match perfectly.
The only difference that I can see from the factory fitted sensors is that the retro fits sit ever so slightly on top of the bumper (about the size and thickness of a 10c piece) whereas the factory ones seem to sit in their own recess in the bumper itself.
