Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Running In a TDI ST Sport

I've done a little searching and have come across a coupld of articles regarding the "running in" of a new engine.

Methods vary from taking it real easy to drive it like its stolen.

I'm interested to know how owners here have run in their TDI.

I know 2 people (not with TID VW's) that have used the drive it like its stolen theory and their cars have gone so much better and harder than the take it easy guys after the run in period.

I'm thinking this could almost be the way, to drive it like its almost stolen, but of course letting it warm up properly before giving it to it.

    What do you all think.

P.S. I've got plenty of time to think about it. I dont get my GT sport until March 08
Can a mod please change my stuff up on the thread title from ST to GT Sport.

I agre with you. Drive it fast, since new.
At 7,500km and no one drop of oil topped up.
I never had a car since new that would use to much of oil.
Here is my running in way.
Start up, let it idle for 30 second (always allow 30seconds idle even if you done 100,00km) and slowly drive untill engine is at operating temp. then you can drive as it would be stolen - may be just a bit less if it has only 15km on odometer and up to 500km revs up to 3000rpm since it is a diesel. From 500km up to 1500km don't go over 3200. Don't drive at steady speeds for long time on hwy. After 1500km drive normaly.

I have done 650km in my GT Sport TDI, and so far it's been a real mixture. I spend 90% of the time driving Miss Daisy, but the other 10% I have been almost full throttle. I have tried not to rev it past 3500 rpm, but because I use the paddles, I have on two or three occasions revved to 4000rpm, simply because I got carried away and didn't change quickly enough. I figure it's no biggie anyway, considering the guys at the wharf would have already had it bouncing off the rev limiter when it had only 2 km on the clock!

I'll continue to drive in the same manner until I hit 1500km, at which point I'll consider it to be pretty well run in. I'm pretty chuffed with the economy so far too. I'm averaging 5.7l/100km with a 50/50 mixture of urban and country driving. That's already better than the manufacturer's claim, and it's not even run in yet!

Most new VW,s are run in at Patricks when loading and driving around there holding yard at ingleburn, they have no idea how to use the DSG gearbox.

My gt sport has 1500km on the clock , I was told to drive it like i'v owned for
2 years keep of those boring freeways and don't drive in cruise for to long
The salesman told me that VW run their engines in at the factory before they leave.

          Regards Kerry

PS thinking about going to Tassie in May next year, anybody down there think
this is a good time of year or not

My understanding is that diesels in general aren't considered to be fully run in until 50,000 plus however you are right about the economy; expect it to slowly get better and better for the next 20,000 as the engine loosens up. I'm only at 13,000 now after six months and have noticed a significant increase in economy, despite it being summer and needing to work the aircon harder.

This post seems to be peer-accepted as gospel so it's good enough for me.

EDIT: Should have pointed out that the above link is discussing the ALU and ALH 1.9 TDI that the US gets. I wouldn't rev our 2.0TDIs to 5100 as the link mentions, mostly because it sounds horrible. Keep it below redline IMO. You don't have any torque left up there anyway.

Yeah I have heard similar things too, and I guess by "run in", I meant the point at which I will start to drive it normally without any fear of causing engine damage. What sort of improvement's in economy are we talking, 5% - 10%?

I think the happy medium is dont rev too hard for too long. Just dont be scared to use the loud pedal.
And vary the loads up and down the gears.
But yeah "driving it like its stolen" if you mean that in the true sense will never be good for a car.

You know I just realised that I have never driven my TDI with the ESP turned off. I must try that this weekend.

You must not drive it hard enough with it switched on to notice it when it cuts in

Lol yeah i have, it's very violent. Typical of FWD on corners and the DSG tends to stay in whatever gear it is in with larger steering angles which adds to the slip and power cut.

Well I've had mine for a week now, have 1200km on the clock and am driving fairly normally, I've got he 2.0 TDI GT Sport with the 6 speed manual. Ive bounced off redline a couple of times due more to being a gumby on gearchanges but all is well and it drives like a dream.
