so, whats the difference between the gt sport and the gti (apart from engine of course)?

ill list the difference ive found between the gt and the c-line (that ive noticed anyway)
    - Bigger brakes
    - 17" wheels
    - Sports suspension (much firmer, more stable ride)
    - Sports seats with big bolsters
    - climatronic
    - mfd plus

id be willing to bet that the setup of the gt is identical to that of the gti, but of course im just guessing sooo... does anyone know for sure any differences between them? (except spoilers and engine)

Our sportsline has the middle 4, not sure about the brakes v the c-line (but no complaints about them anyway) Would be good to have the full MFD - does it let you set all the options yourself?

forgot to mention the much quicker engine

the mdf lets you set a few options like how the doors lock and unlock but it doesnt really do a great deal more than the half height display except look fancier. it'd be interesting to line up the whole golf range and compare them point for point.

Same size wheels (different design) and tyres (same brand & size). Same brakes (calipers aren't red, though). Same suspension, although the dampers are from the Sportline and are slightly softer than the GTI. Same level of trim (although the GT seats are marginally smaller in the side bolsters). Same equipment (6 air bags, Dual zone climate control, ABS, ASR, BrakeAssist &c), although it misses out on the 6 stacker and the full alarm.

Misses out on the GTI/R32 wheel and gear knob, although the standard wheel isn't foul. The speedo on the GTI goes up to 300kph instead of 260kph (a moot point, I guess). The GT has a boost gauge but looses the temp gauge in the process.
GTI has alloy pedal covers and Tyre Pressure monitor, GT doesn't - but has W (Winter) button ().

With DSG, the GT also has the paddle change of the GTI and R32. GTI has a larger rear spoiler and extra Tupperware down the sides. Both get fog lights, and the 08 GTI now matches the GTs high line MFD. GTI gets a luggage net and silver interior trim, while the GT has piano black trim bits (although it gets brushed silver trim here and there inside). Both have the multi function wheel controls, and the same options - roof, leather, DSG, Bi-Xenons, Sat Nav, and metallic paint.

Speaking of paint, you get the choice of a 6th colour in the GT - United Grey, and Graphite Blue instead of Shadow Blue in the GTI. Oh, and the GTI has a jet black roof lining vs off white in the GT, along with differently patterned cloth trim. The instrument pod is different to the GTs - same gauges, just a different design - you'll need a good memory to notice this during a test drive.

And I guess, there's a _choice_ of engine in the GT (you knew that). Well I think that's all I can remember - I went through the same exercise 6 months ago (even had a spreadsheet with all the differences/similarities - how nerdy is that?!! ) Both are really nice cars - whatever you choose won't be wrong - good luck and let us know what you've decided on. I thought you'd already settled on a GT TDI? (June this year?) What happened?

PS Go hard on the price - the Aussie dollar means their margin is huge. Find a dealer with the colour you want in stock, but NEVER let them know you give a toss about what colour it is - they'll use it as emotional leverage. Tell them you don't care if it's black, white, or red. That tells them you may buy from another dealer (bad for them). They play hardball when they know they have what you want. I used Private Fleet to shop for me once the dealer in Adelaide kept talking RRP . They found me the car I wanted in Melbourne at a considerable saving. They did a great job.

Think they charge as an extra for the net (I know it was with the Pogo).

Yours came with a net under the rear parcel shelf?

                    Now I'm really feeling deprived.

The 07 GTIs kept the net in a little plastic bag under the rear floor with the spare wheel.
At least that's where they all were when I was car shopping earlier this year.
Dunno - maybe we need some GTI experts to comment...

I think that is what the they call the luggage net.

At delivery mine was installed under the parcel shelf where it belongs. It is handy, since there isn't any space in the wheel well for any small bits & pieces.

I thought the GTi had firmer springs as well, not just dampers.
The first GTs reportedly had the same suspension as the sportline, which was half way between the comfortline and the GTI.
                        Anyone able to clarify?

most of the reviews ive read say same springs as a GTI and different struts/shocks.

Sounds like someone needs to break out the ol' ETKA

The GTI has 25mm lower than standard model GOLF.
The GT had 15mm lower than standard GOLF.
So there is a 10mm differance between GTI & GT.
I belive the GT & GTI may have the same dampening rates?
Mine is a GT TDI, 17" wheels, 15mm lower, larger brakes (same as GTI?) but not red calipers, Temp gauge not bost gauge, full MFD, simlar but different dash pod for speedo etc. Trim color mostly black with red patterned seat squabs, fully bolstered seats but different to GTI with diffent headrest. The rear bumper lower section is different between GTI & GT. The grill and inserts are the same as a jetta, without the chrome bits. Front bumper is same as GTI or Jetta. Off white head linner not black. DSG with paddel switches. Same EXT. lights as GTI. Mags are 17" & of different style - same as that as optioned on Jetta's. A wet weather button on Diesel or GT only? Full imobiliser/locking but not alarm (mine is fitted with a canbus upgrade).
The GTI gets a roof spoiler added as standard, side skirts?, front bumper valance?

PS: I'll be posting photo's soon, Shot's of after and idiot reversed over the front, squashing it. Off to the repaires soon- CANNOT WAIT.
