  • fuel consumption question.

Just a quick question for our MK5 members.
Is the petrol motor the same as diesel in regard to total fuel is cut off
when you lift your foot off the accelerator when in motion, or is this just a diesel thing.
Is this also the case with manual diesels, Does the MDF show 0 fuel consumption when still in gear when slowing or going down hill.
    Just curious,
    Thanks Neil.

    Hi Neil,

Yes, the MFD displays zero if you take your foot off.

PS. Prawns are very high in cholesterol, maybe you should share!

    Cheers

      Thanks George.
Just curious as Ive been getting great fuel consumption even when
      driving around the Sydney city.
Have worked out if I get the foot of the accelerator as soon as I see a red light and coast up to it instead of drive up to it with the foot just on the
accelerator a big saving can be made. even slowing and waiting for the light
to go green and taking off in 2nd instead of stopping and letting the DSG to start off in 1st. Averaged around town on Saturday 4.5 l/100.
      Neil.
PS Prawns have the good Cholesterol. Scientists this week now say they are
      good for you.

with a manual (and a dsg because its essentially a manual), the engine uses the velocity of the car to keep itself turning, whereas in a conventional automatic it burns fuel to keep the engine turning even when your foot is off the accelerator. therefore im guessing that in the fsi auto, it would burn fuel when you take your foot off the accelerator but it wouldnt if it was an fsi manual

          Formula to consider:

          1/2 of petrol/diesel consumption = entertainment cost.

Manual GTI does the same thing. Zero fuel use when coasting.
Helps me to average 10.0L/100km around sydney, even when more than half my travel is in peak hour.

Makes up for the 40+ l/100km instantaneous when I put the foot down.
Putting the foot down makes comsumption look bad. But it's fun, so who really cares.
