  • engine oil light

    hi all bros,

My MK5 GTi is now almost 7000km and the engine oil light was on again yestesday. This is already the second time (first time happened around 3000km) and i am wondering is that normal as the dealer said to me that because they are using some very thin oil for the run-in process like 0w30. anyone have problems like that before? any experience?

    much apppreciated

New motors do use oil to a certain extent during the running in process. You need to keep an eye on the level rather than relying on the light, as by that point damage from starvation is a real possibility.

Running the motor too gently will increase the time it takes to bed in and can lead to increased oil consumption throughout the life of the motor.

I know this is an old tale but in the 90's there were lots of stories of 16v Golfs using vast amounts of oil and the best explanation was due to being run in too gently.

My advice would be to find some long hills and drive up them pretty hard in 3rd gear.

Along the lines of what this fella says.

It is acceptable for these engines to use 1ltr per 1000ks and the owners manual will tell you that. They do get better mate. Just keep your eye on her and by the sounds you already are

if engines use more than 1lt per 1000ks you call them a 2stroke

I'm pretty sure it says something like that but only when driven on autobahns at very high speed.
