The selling point of the catch can is to reduce or stop the build up.
It didnt do it, the photos prove that. The wording is may help reduce the build up, no help reduce the problem, even BSH says that.
All the other posters have mentioned are theories only, there is no evidence that a catch can helps with valve stem seals or turbo bearings.
If you want i can attach more links to threads disproving catch cans, total waste of money.

Catch cans have been around since the dawn of time and up until direct injection cars come to the market they were always designed to keep your intake charge clean. Whilst there is a debate around their usefulness in keeping your valves clean there are massive improvements in the amount of oil contaminating the intake tract on a car that has one installed.

I work with these cars every day and have first hand experience with the differences between cars that have a catch can vs those that dont. Just a few days ago I had a tuned Golf R apart that had a 42DD catch can installed from new. This car had 40,000kms on the clock. No oily turbo, no oil pooling in the intercooler hoses and nice smooth running engine.

The other benefit is that the factory PCV setup is totally useless and prone to failure. Even the latest revisions arent very good on a tuned car. Either re-inforcing the valve with a proper check valve or removing the factory setup is definitely recommended in my opinion.

So yeah.. Claims of stopping carbon build up on valves may not be 100% true but claims that they are a total waste of money are even more fanciful.

Just a thought - would replacing the PCV with a simple rubber hose suffice ?

I have the conversion plate and intake manifold plug from Greg @ carformance - while it doesn't filter any of the oil vapor would it be sufficient to run in the meantime ?! I have a track day coming up and dont have the time to fab a mount up for a catch can

*EDIT* Same principle as this - but instead of a plate and a small bypass between the two outlets I will have a small length of rubber hose

Sorry to resurrect this thread -
I have replaced my PCV about 16000km ago. Now, my car makes little bit of whistle when first started up, driving through the car park at around 30km/h speed. And makes bit of a whistle on throttle. Still makes to peak PSI I think (Bluefin).

I wonder if the PCV replaced early last year is bung again. I fitted Rev D DV at the same time. I am thinking to go either

          1) BSH PCV revamp kit
          or
          2) 42DD Stealthy catch can
          or
          3) New OEM PCV again.

Has anyone used BSH revamp kit.. and recommend it?
I will check the DV as well - but I did hear they don't fail often unlike the old diaphragm ones...
