Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New to MkV Golf 2.0 TDI - few silly questions

    Gday

So today I took ownership of a Black 2006 MkV Golf TDI 2.0 (not sure what engine it is tho..) Comfortline.

I have a few questions which may be silly so again I apologise!

    1) How do I access the menu settings? I'm thinking the button on my steering wheel may be broken but can't be sure. I have the multi function steering wheel and the book only focuses on the wiper stalk controls. How do I access the settings of the menu?! I press the little menu button but nothing happens, and scrolling through the menu on screen doesn't give me a setting option. Am I doing it wrong? Also, my screen may be a half screen - icons on the top half, and all text on the bottom - gear selector running down the right hand side. Surely I can access settings though? bloody heck!!

    2) I have a phone button on my steering wheel - but again am not sure if it's working (and can't get to the settings). I set up bluetooh on my boss's wife Golf (same series) but can't remember how I did it.

    3) When locked in the car, to unlock the doors do I press the unlock button once or twice? I seem to have to press it a few times to get the rest of the car to unlock (I do hear the doors unlock though so maybe I'm doing it wrong..)

    4) When I start the car it squeaks very quickly once or twice. once fired up the squeak is nowhere to be heard. The car is covered by dealer warranty (and statutory warranty) so it's not a big deal but I thought maybe it's just a VW thing? The car starts and drives and sounds great after the initial start!

    5) Does the stereo have any AUX inputs..? The book again does not mention this! In my Vectra C i was able to install an AUX cable aftermarket by doing some work behind the unit, is this the case also? i would very much like a aux input!!

    6) Is the star button on the wheel able to be changed? If i could get into the settings I would know..

    Any help is appreciated!! Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
    The engine is BKD.
You need to play with the menu and OK buttons, try pressing menu button second time to get into the second menu.
    Where in Adelaide are you?

      Thanks! What does BKD mean..?

I'm in Para Hills - but all excuses to drive the new TDI!

I did try and press the button a second time but still didn't do anything The OK button goes between the two different memories for some of the options (fuel consumption, trip time, etc). I'd like to get into the settings without the software, but I think I may have a half screen - the book shows a combi-screen and a half-screen (exactly like mine), but I can't find any of the options listed anywhere! The convinience ones are what i'd like to get to so i can change the locking options!

Further reading the squeak noise may the dual clutch thing..? It's under warranty anyway and I have two days to cool off if anything bad lol

BKD is the engine code. You can't change the locking order through the menu, for that you need VCDS from Ross-tech or similar scaning tool.

          1. The half-height mfd f the 2006 model doesn't allow you to access any menu options, you need the vag-com software (or a dealer) to change settings.

          2. Bluetooth will only work if it came with it from the factory (it will have a prominent mic on the dash if its fitted). The phone button is redundant if not fitted.

          3. Single press unlocks the driver's door, 2 presses (about half a second gap) unlocks all doors and boot.

          4. No idea sorry - get it checked before the warranty runs out if concerned.

          5. No stereo aux inputs can you can fit one. I fitted a Connects2 adapter that plugs into the 6 stacker plug in the back of the stereo (won't work if it has the 6 stacker option), works great. Example here: VOLKSWAGEN EOS, Golf MK5, Passat, Polo MP3 iPod Aux Input Adaptor CTVVGX004 | eBay

6 Not sure what you're referring to here.

I hope that helps. None of those are silly questions, it can be a bit confusing at first with any new car.

1 - thanks buddy - would a dealer charge for this..? and do i have to take it to VW or the dealer I bought it from? Am I able to sit with them and look at all the different options? little bit devo I can't change the options myself!

            5. I don't have the CD Changer in my car at all... so this connector will let me use aux and have an input? How easy was it to connect up and where did you put the AUX input? i was thinking on one of the unused option buttons behind the DSG stick

            6. on the steering wheel above the phone button - there's a star - when i press this it mutes the radio!

Thanks heaps for the help with the locking though! I guess the key is the same principal (as my Vectra was)?

Star button is only for muting. Phone button only works if you have a phone option/kit installed.. Obviously otherwise it does nothing

The dealer may or may not charge you depending on how nice the are. It may be a bit much to take in so soon but it would really be worthwhile to purchase a VCDS cable for yourself, it will allow you to do a lot more things than just changing MFD and radio options. Have a look at the VCDS technical section to get yourself familiar, it basically allows you to do almost all dealer level settings, log data specific to your car etc.

Do you have an RCD300 / 310 (black and white screen CD player)? If you want more out of your headunit it may be worthwhile to consider an upgrade - lots of information and options in the Car Audio section, I would make recommendations but I would be biased

The key unlock behaviour can be changed via VCDS. You could make it unlock all doors at once with one press, and also choose to enable auto-lock at 20+km/h and auto-unlock when you pull the key out, for example. If it's not enabled, you can also enable the function to unwind / wind windows by holding down the unlock / lock key.

I have the black & white screen - 510 maybe, i'm not too sure. The AUX input stickshift3000 referred to looks alright - i might look into a new headunit but the one that is in the car looks nice and stock though ! probably needs new speakers though lol, the vectra had really nice Bose speakers.

I'm not confident enough to go and do the VCDS myself - just incase I go and stuff something up and then bam, no more car lol - my luck that's what would happen. I work with computers every day but nothing that intense! is there anybody in Adelaide who has a cable and software and can run it past me or even do some changes for me? lol

the squeak on start up is making me nervous though..
