I thought the same thing. Unless you are tailgating someone on a highway, your chances of getting a stone chip are pretty slim.
I saw some of this film stuff on a mates parents Barina, the paint under is a completely different colour to the paint on the rest of the car.
I know my car is 14 years old, but I do a 800km drive every couple of months, and never have any issues with stone chips, even gettting the thing sideways down gravel tracks.
