Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • f#@k the door wont open

Hi guys just did a fluid service for my mk5 tdi along with timing belt being changed this weekend, transferring car under my name. (There goes some of my holiday money) I encounter another problem with my left rear door becoming "stuck" can't open it. Tried unlocking and locking. I know its a common issue with the golfs. I've asked volkspower how much. 600 was too much... can anyone recommend me a solution.

PS its already passed rwc so if its the 600 I have to pay to get it fixed I'm willing to hold it off til another couple of months

Have fun getting it open.I've heard of some dealers cutting the outerskin to get to the lock.Voila new door skin and paint job needed before the lock replacement.
    Shame on VW

I've also heard that but it seems excessive to me. I'd rather take to the door trim with a dremel...

you won't get to the door locking mechanism from the inside, had the same thing happen in my dads Jetta, you have to pull the door skin off once you have the door open. we tried many things to get the door open the one that finally worked, is that one of us was at the drivers door and flicking(key in the door) it locked and open constantly, while one person just kept pulling and releasing the door handle on the locked door, took about 1 min to open as opposed to all the other methods i cam up with on the net- none of which worked and took ages.
Once you have the door opened, we took the door skin off and pulled the door locking mechanism out, and just shut the door, the next day i went to a wrecker and picked up the same locking mechanism for $65(or less maybe). fitted it and haven't had a problem since.
thats my story and how we solved it in dads car. all the best sorting it.
BTW, once you get the door open you need TX bits to undo all the bolts that hold the skin on, but you can get the set of TX bits from the local car parts place for a few bucks.

best of luck opening the door.

Sorry Polski but you are incorrect, you can get to the lock mechanism from the inside, it's not pretty or overly easy to do, but it can be done.

how?? there's no holes in the door, you would have to hack your interior to hell, then hack through the metal??? unless i totally missed something, i didn't come up with anything about access from inside

I realize that you have tried unlocking and locking the door. You might try disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours and then reconnecting it. I've had problems with a 2-door MkV GTI's door electronics / lock sensor / comfort control. Seems like a long stretch, but maybe the Comfort Control Module thinks the door is already unlocked and isn't actually trying to do anything - I've had the reverse of this happen. Worth a shot before you go to town on a door from the inside.
