Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • DSG Service

Just thought i would let people know that I got my DSG service done last week, have noticed a smoother change especially 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd. Feels more like new again which is good

Any service centre that says DSG is a lifetime unit that doesnt need replacing (and some will tell you that), tell them to check their service matrix sheets again . Push for it if you have to, last thing you want is a blown DSG, even if its in warranty, would mean an extended period off the road.

That DSG Oil certainly is the expensive bit, $43.46 x 6 (1.0 litre bottles) = $260.76.....OMFG!!!

    Still...whats $260.76 compared to a new box!!!?

      Nice to know, thanks.

Was it 60,000 where that needs to be done?

Can't they have one 6 litre bottle at $150.

That is quite expensive for oil, I wonder how specialised the oil really is?

as far as when it gets done there seems to still be some contention, i had it done at 90,000kms but have heard of people getting it done at 60,000 and some service centers have said 120,000? I think 60,000 kms is the reccomended but I cant confirm this...any of the VW techs care to step in on this one?

Apparently 60ks mate. Crazy how the unit is said to be life service. Load of rubbish really, same with ZF tiptronics too. Look the oil is dear but holds very special friction properties. And like every other fluid it has a shelf life. The Haldex oil in 'Quattro" is a friction based oil and it gets changed at 60k so why is the DSG any different. Cooling systems are "sealed for life now" so lets look at that. That means they are warranting coolant, thermostat, water pump etc which if they fail would need a coolant change anyway! Any transmission that has been in service for around 60ks will always feel the benefit of an oil change. Manuals included.
Ive got an Audi here in surgery at the moment that missed its Multitronic oil changes and hey it has seriosly affected it. Hopefully a change and a screen filter will help it but i say the damage is done.
Auto transmissions oil deteriotes with heat and breaks down the friction properties. This is when you start to feel the flaring and banging.
I agree with you that you would feel a great difference after the change mate and im glad you brought up the subject, as i could rant on and on about service intervals set by the dealer.

              Hi Jimmy,

Are you saying the service intervals are too long and if so do you mean across the board or specifically for transmissions? For example are you saying the 15,000 service interval for my Jetta is too long?

Would appreciate your perspective (or ranting if you wish!)

              Cheers

              George

Hi George, i was generalising gearboxes. The Jetta service at 15k is ok for normal driving and 7,500 for interim services if you are stop starting alot or if in my case i feel there is no false economy having an oil change every 7,500. You certainly cant overdo that. I have been Audi/VW all my days and also worked for Porsche. They have extended there intervals to 30k!! They trust their motors or the oil is certainly getting better?
BUt im sure most would agree that fluids would have to have a shelf life or working life as heat eventually breaks down the important properties i feel.
