  • Golf 1.9 Tdi Discontinued in Jan 08?

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of ordering a 1.9TDI Golf to replace my Mk V 1.6 Comfortline which has done 120,000 km in three years!

My dealer has told me he has pre-ordered 18-20 Golf V 1.9 TDi due in January because Volkswagen will not be importing that engine anymore. He says the January ones are the last batch!

He says the engine will contine in the Polo, Caddy etc.

Seems strange to me as the model has been so sucessful. Effectively the entry price for a golf diesel will jump by $5,000 from the current 1.9Tdi Trendline to the 2.0Tdi Comfortline! Are VW trying to move upmarket!

If anyone could confirm the above I would be very grateful! If they are still available to order I will order one with ESP!

    Regards,

    Luke Jenner

They stop making them mid Dec.

I was on the point of ordering a 1.9 TDI Comfortline Golf a couple of weeks back when the salesman informed me last orders would be taken in mid December.

If he hadn't admitted that, I would have ended up with a three month superseded car by the time I took delivery. We have since signed up for a Jetta 2.0 TDI.

I went to Brisbane's two dealers and not one word was ever mentioned about the demise of the 1.9 Golf option. In fact, I have never met such a pack of wankers [language!] in my life - unbelievable!.

If anyone wants the name of the only (in my experience) honest VW salesperson in South East Queensland, send me a pm. I can also recommend a NSW dealer that I intended to use if I had not found a reputable local dealership.

Do they make the comfortline in 1.9. I thought it was just the trendline.

They definately have comfortline - a mate at work has one.

They retail for $29,990 whereas the 1.9Tdi trendline is $27,990.

I'm sure servicing won't be a problem as plenty of other VWs use this great little motor. However, resale might be a different matter.

I was told about this by a VW salesman on 5 November so the news has been out there for a while.

I would let the sales manager at your dealership know that they have been less than honest with you and ask what they are going to do about it.

I suppose it depends how long you want to keep your cars regarding resale.

Remember the guy's on this forum have early model VW's
and don't seem to have much problem getting parts.

And the best thing about a 1.9 is the better fuel efficiency than a 2 litre.
I'm all for better fuel efficiency and looking at better ways to save.
I was under the impression the 1.9 was only in the trendline. If I had done
my research better I would have considered the 1.9 comfortline, but then
I fell in love with the Jetta.

                According to VW Australia...

So I called VW and they denied that it was going to be discontinued. There may be upgrades but not discontinuation.

Do you think it's just a PR thing for them to say and they can't give out the 'real' information cos sales will drop?

If 1.9 is more fuel efficient Neil, then I'm happy to stick to it...

I guess I just don't quite like the idea of buying something new and then suddenly it's not avail anymore but from another perspective, that'll mean that I have the newest of the discontinued line.. hahahah

I plan to sell it only in 2012 or so... thoughts?

Your not saving that much more with the 1.9, just checked their figures
1.9 in manual is 5.5l/100 and 2.0 is 5.7l/100 but your saving 2-3 grand on
the overall price and thats a few years worth of fuel.
Have not driven the 1.9 but I know the 2.0 is plenty powerful enough, I
cant understand why guy's want to chip their car for more power.
The only issue for me would be the power difference.
I would seek for info from VW and get it in writing that the 1.9 is not
to be discontinued. Also remember the golf's have great resale value.
                  Neil.

thanks neil i'll write to them now...

yeah i don't think i'll have a problem selling it in a few years but i just want to know that i'm getting what i'm paying for!

i can't afford the 2.0 anyway so i'll have to downgrade to a trendline or something if the dealer would let me change my order... i have an amazing deal already so i don't really want to push it.. i'm not very good at bartering at all!!!

Is your dealer telling you they are discontinuing the 1.9 or have you just read it in the forum.
I would be using that info against your dealer to get a better deal.
I know you said you have a great deal already, but make them aware you
are concerned about resale value and parts, see if you can get a better deal
                      again.

I just read it in the forum... maybe I should call to ask them.
Do you think it'd be reasonable to ask for a 2.0 for just $1,000 more?

I would not like you chances on that deal (2.0), but maybe get a cheaper
deal on the 1.9 deal you already have.

Make them aware you have heard the 1.9 to be discontinued

Most likely reason is, VW are making way for Common Rail TDI production.

Also Golf VI will probably debut the common rail TDIs they will not be in the MkV.

                            So resale should stay stable.

This is me speculating/rumouring nothing concrete

I confirmed with the dealer principal today and he confirmed that VW have told them that the TDi in its current form will be discontinued. He believed it will be will replaced by another model in the range but wasn't sure what. He thought they may introduce a 1.9Tdi that is a mid-spec model (half way between trendline and comfortline) that is basically a trendline with alloy wheels and cruise control.

Maybe this will be the 'Golf Match' specification as sold in the UK:

'Brushed Stainless Steel' decorative inserts in dash and 'Laquered Stainless Steel' decorative inserts in centre console
                              12V socket in luggage compartment
Additional storage compartment in the roof console
                              Alarm with interior protection
                              Alloy wheels, four 6 1/2J x 15 'Canberra' with 195/65 R15 tyres and anti-theft wheel bolts
                              Automatic coming/leaving home lighting function
Bag hooks in luggage compartment, x 2
Body-coloured bumper strips, side bump strips and door handles
Body-coloured door mirrors with integrated indicators
                              Cruise Control
                              Dusk sensor, automatic driving lights
                              Electric windows, rear
Front centre armrest with storage compartment, two rear air vents and cup holders
Front comfort seats with height and lumbar adjustment
                              Front footwell illumination
                              Front seat back storage pockets
                              iPod preparation, armrest mounted
                              Load-through provision
Multifunction steering wheel including highline computer, leather gear knob and handbrake grip
                              Radio/CD player with 8 speakers
Rain sensor and automatic dimming interior rear-view mirror
                              Reading lights, chrome surrounds
                              Two-tone horn
                              Upholstery - 'Opera' loop-velour
                              Vanity mirrors - illuminated

`This is listed as a NEW model in the UK. Interestingly the UK website says this is onlt a five speed.

My dealer told me that they had a TDi delivered and the customer complained she could not select 6th gear! After they did some investigation they found out that a five speed box had been fitted! Must have been a Friday car!
