  • Brake booster GTI

Hi all my brake booster needs replacing, I can hear it leaking at the peddle. Does anyone know if this can throw an EVAP engine light?
Lower limit exceeded..Also anyone know where I can purchase subaru upper engine cleaner from? I assume Subaru dealership sells them?
Is 1300 what you pay for a BB replacement?

replaced 1 of these today nightmare of a job you have to drop the engine and gearbox off there mounts and the booster still only just squeezes past the turbo. will check part number 2morro for you, make sure you get the little o ring that goes between master cylinder and booster will also get this for you. this vehichle today was well out of warranty a 2006 model but volkswagen paid for all parts and labour under goodwill request. the 1 on ebay your looking at is differant the hole for the vacum pipe to go in is on the wrong side. you might be able to make it work though. evap fault more than likely your charcoal canistor and evap purge vavle check your pcv valve too.

Thanks bushnut, I've done the pcv and purge valve, I remember the dealership messing with the car more than a year ago and I then had to take it in for fumes inside the car, they mention some pipe from the charcoal canister was broken at the time...sounds suspect.
Wow goodwill gesture, my dealership would not even take a couple of hundred off the price...not entirely happy with the service TBH.

The goodwill gesture is not given by the dealer, but by VW Aus. You need to ask the dealer to apply for goodwill from VW Aus, rather than just asking them (the dealer) to discount their quote.

Thanks, I guess when it's out of warranty I just need to suck it up and pay the going rate, was told the break booster could well be causing that fault but one person said it was not common to fail.
After the PCV change vcds appears to have changed from lower limit exceeded to incorrect flow, so many things seem to affect this system as a whole seems like a big job though.. hopefully they can put it back together without breaking anything else lol

you can ask your dealer for assistance/goodwill and then they have to submit a goodwill asistance claim to vw australia VGA its abit of a lottery it helps to have a good service history and be the owner from new the best you will get is %100 parts and labour paid for. sometimes you get %100 parts paid for and you have to foot the labour this goes all the way from %100 to %10 you might get all the labour paid for and pay for the parts its a lottery. the part number of the 1 i replaced was 1k2614105an and the new booster part number was 3c2614106n so looks like the passat 3c versions uses the same booster. the little o ring seal part # is 1j0611243 this goes between the booster and master cylinder. if you not happy with that dealer go to another ask them to check it over tell them youve had it looked at by another dealer they suspect the booster and ask for a goodwill asistance for repairs. very rare for boosters to fail i dont think the 1 i replaced was faulty but i didnt diagnose it the part was already ordered so i just had to fit it. if you get a new charcoal canistor it comes with the pipe that they sounds like they broke. i would replace this as ive done evap purge vavles and pcv valves and had the engine lights come back on changed the canistor and all is good. these are the 3 main failures hope this helps you out.

Thanks Bushnut, might have a look at the charcoal canister, do you order from ECS or from Australia? I called a different dealer, they didn't ring back. Took it to another place also, they would need more time with it to diagnose (independant) From what I have read the noise coming from break pedal that goes away when depressed seems to be pointing towards the booster, although the independent shop has never replaced one in all the time he has worked on gti's...I would suspect its worth replacing master cylinder at the same time.
I'll ask the service manager on Monday, but I dont think he will bother.
this one looks a bit cheaper than from the dealers...

              Cheers for your assistance.

I wouldn't give up this easily. As has been said, the goodwill system seems pretty random (that's my experience anyway) and because a brake booster failing is such a rare occurance they might be more generous with their response...

Thanks TomC I will let you know the outcome.
P.s. anyone know the best place to purchase a charcoal canister? I think the part may be 1K0 201 797 AB not sure though, I know it's not as big an issue as the brake booster but it's been bugging me for a long time EVAP faults seem to be a bugger to diagnose, from what I have read it can be anywhere on the intake system, and yes I was a tank brimmer...
