    My son lost the key to the Golf....

    I just order a new key from my dealer and it costs $359 for the key and remote plus another $65 for programing so $424 all up
    Another dealer quoted $495. It's crazy how much they charge you for replacement parts.

        Theres a VW dealer on the northern beaches on the north shore that does free programming when you buy a key, saved me 100 on my mk3
        whats his name... on the northern beaches Bill Buckle? Does Toyotas as well...

          I lost my audi (MY07) key last thursday. $261.00 for a replacement. Still a ripper but I am starting to feel a bit better after reading what VW are charging. It takes two weeks for it to come down from Sydney to Melbourne. Strange.

            The 2 weeks delay is from Germany. The key is cut per VIN number from the factory mate generally 10 days to 2 weeks

              Keys from e-bay

              I asked the dealer about getting a key cut and they told me that thay have not found anyone that can laser cut the keys. The key comes already cut from Germany...

              I had to prove I owned the car before they would order the key and I had to pay upfront. $336.55 and there will be another $55 to code it when it comes in (in about 5 days about2 weeks after ordering).

              If it is true that there are no locksmiths able to cut a Mk5 key there could be a business opportunity

                Maybe, might need some unique and expensive equipment, and might infringe patents - but if a cheaper option came up, I'm sure people would use it.

                  Definitely not true. I've had a blank key cut at my local locksmith (not all can do it though, they need a special computer controlled cutter).

                  The real problem though is obtaining a new transponder chip (the thing in the key that talks with the car's immobiliser, not the remote). VW won't sell them, they are VERY diificult to find, and even if you do manage to get the right one, ONLY your dealer can program late model VW ECUs to recognize them anyway (they hook-up to the main VW computer in germany to do it). VagCom can't do it (as far as I know).

                  BTW if you do ever get a new key, make sure you take ALL your keys to the dealer for programming. If you leave any at home, next time you try to use them the car will start and then cut out, displaying the immobiliser error light !

                    They don't hook up to computer in Germany they get seven digit code from Germany which is valid 24 hours. So within 24 hours they have to program it.

                      I was told that the latest VW ECUs and key transponders (the ones that are programmed for a particular model of car and also have rolling codes) do have to be programmed while hooked up to the computer in Germany. That was why VagCom can't do it. I didn't actually see it done, so I may not have been told the right thing

                        You were and you weren't told the right thing. having worked in several service departments yes you do need to contact the manufacturer for the code. No it doesnt have to be 'online' MRL T5 was correct in what he said, when telling people all day about key programming etc it is easier to just say what you were told as the process to get code is just plain boring and time consuming.. All service departments do it.. you kinda develop a way to explain something then just stick to it even though what really happens is a little different to how its explained to the customer.

                          1 VW keys are expensive and fiddly to replace, so look after them carefully !

                          2 Only VW dealers can code the immobiliser transponders on late model VW keys, regardless of where you you buy them from ( VW or ebay or anywhere else).

                            No probs.. yw. These days all keys are expensive to buy for any manufacturer and yeah nowadays only dealers are able to code them. Just out of curiosity, i thought on purchase of a vehicle you were able to buy a 3rd key for a fraction of the cost of purchasing it as a spare part, can anyone confirm this?

                              I was offered a 3rd key (remote) for what I thought at the time was an outrageous $200 (I think) so declined. I thought I could rustle one up from a locksmith for a lot less than that - what a misguided fool I was !

                              Then (after I had taken delivery of my my new VW) when I was quoted $480 for one I realized what a (relative) bargain that $200 was .

                              I did build a working remote (eventually) from bits off ebay and the internet, but it took an awful lot of fiddling and several false starts (and two trips to the dealerfor programming). I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a dedicated bargain hunter with lots of perseverence. Getting the right transponder chip was the hard bit, key blades and remotes were easy.

                                I know i have my code number with me in two places. One on security card and another one stuck to owners manual book.
