  • MK5 GTI oil consumption

After a bit of a look around, I have not been able to find the acceptable (by VW) oil consumption on a GTI.
Mine always had a thirst for oil, but it is now drinking 2L in less than 5,000kms.
It feels quite high. Any comments.
Also, has anyone had improvements in oil consumption with an oil additive? Or is it not recommended?
    Thanks.

Our cars are renowned for oil consumption.
Consumption varies between cars due to methods of "running in", maintenance, servicing, modifications, abuse, neglect etc etc.

If you're concerned, have your VW dealership perform an oil consumption test.

The correct oil grade (504/507) is also crucial to oil consumption.

Volkswagen says oil consumption can be as high as 0.5 L per 1000 km depending on your driving style.

2.0 L per 5000 km is the equivalent of 0.4 L per 1000 km, so it's still within the allowed range.

One should also distinguish between whether it's an issue of oil consumption, or an issue of oil leakage - though admittedly, this is not always obvious or easy to determine.

Objectively speaking, I can't say whether oil additives will help...

But subjectively speaking, I have my doubts - and I wouldn't recommend it anyway. It's akin to targeting the symptom rather than the problem.

i have been keeping an eye on my level since my purchase of my 07 gti , did a oil change the few days after purchase , and i have driven the golf on a very regular basis , the oil level sits on a 1/4 on the dip stick so i think thats normal and nearing 5000klm , reminds me i will top it up tomorrow ...

The oil issues with GTIs are well documented. So much so that the threads have been collated into a sticky thread here - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...elf-73317.html

Both my R32 and A4 3.0 drank oil heavy up untill 60,000km-90,000km. It becomes better from there onwards. It's even worse if you are like me, buy the car new and do full service after 1000km using high spec synthetic oils.
Same happen to new BMW M3 and few other German cars.

I found the way to fix it - one or two days at race track. Then it's all fine. Conclusion was that it takes our engines looong time to run in. Especially if you baby it and run high quality oils.

I know the earlier Mk5's burnt a lot more oil than the later ones due to changes in the piston rings etc.

I've had my Mk5 Pirelli for nearly 4 years now, and I've never had to put a single drop of oil into it to top it off. Never burnt a drop even after a few track days/heavy driving etc - but that's done to revised rings on the Pirelli engine.

It's a fairly common thing so I wouldn't worry too much. Just a bit of a pain having to top it off all the time.

I always keep a 1 litre bottle of oil in the little boot side slot for top ups every so often. More so with long distance driving.

Also try a slightly thicker 5/40 or 10/40 oil for a touch reduced consumptio -pretty sure castrol edge comes in that combo !

I agree with everything mentioned, initially my car couldn't make it to 7500k without a top up. These days i rarely need to top it up in between services. It seems to drink less as it got older, it's now at 132k.
