scrap her (the wife that is..) .Remember a dub is for life, wives come and go.

but seriously, all cars have issues. Ive driven lots of different types and makes and trawled through many-a-forum reading horror stories. At the end of the day comparing a new car to an old car is a little bit false. Think about how much more technology there is in a new car (and hence how much more there is to go wrong). Although saying that - wheel bearings going wonky is a little concerning if it happens too frequently.

    good luck mate

.... ok how do i delete search history again, can't let the wife see this or else ill be needing that lawyer's number off you too

Moving from one European marque to another European marque for the purpose of trouble-free motoring, is like shooting your left foot, then shooting your right foot.

I like how there are 6R Polo drivers who have migrated to Fiats and Citroens due to reliability issues

        Qwertypants, are you married??

It's not strictly an issue of reliability, it's the aftersales experience as a whole.

A pleasant sales experience is quickly forgotten when things like basic courtesy, customer service, technical competence & experience, handling of warranty claims, servicing costs, parts availability, etc, etc, as well as reliability, are poorly managed - particularly by European marques in this country.

I would regard gearboxes breaking down continually and multiple engine rebuilds to be more than just poor customer service on the part of the dealer.

              No doubt.

However, the OP's wife is setting herself up for disappointment if she thinks owning a BMW or Merc will definitely be less unpleasant.

                  Well said.

Maybe you should be looking at a Lexus IS250, should be trouble free.

You probably already know this but when you hold the unlock button on your remote it brings all windows down, same when you hold the key turned it the unlock position on the drivers door. It could be this feature which is malfunctioning causing the windows to open.

I had one as a rental would you believe it. My impression was that, whilst it won't set the world alight, it was very a civilised and calming drive.

                        Reverse psychology.

Start really getting into supercharged Walkinshaw utes, get a HSV shirt and using words like "Powercruise" and "circle-work". She'll be glad when you come back to a Golf R.

[QUOTE=kaanage;841464]I like how there are 6R Polo drivers who have migrated to Fiats and Citroens due to reliability issues

Mate of mine and a Citroen afficionado has had a ***t load of trouble with his C5 - appalling reliability and the Aust importer doesn't care.

Every car has it's gremlins - you can drive a staid Toyota and not have issues or a European brand and not have issues. My VW has been a daily driver for 11yrs and taken to Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Albany, Geraldton and has not let me down. Sure I had an alternator go, the dreaded plastic clip on the window regulator, the resistors on the cooling fans and an ESP lat sensor on the AWD - but all known issues and relatively inexpensively repaired. For the money the car is still heaps better than your average drive.

I would get the R - saw a new Mk6 the other day and it looked a real sleeper. But I would not get the DSG box. I have driven a few from the GTi to the TDi and a new Transporter with them and while the changes are superb, I don't think I can trust them yet.
