Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The only thing you could do was shift to 5th, and then to 4th manually, the time and added acceleration taken to do so doesn't really seem to equate to much of a benefit to me.

Then again, I'm sure it's much more fun.
i think you misunderstood me in that post, i was talking about driving in AUTO mode. when driving in auto mode, the transmission/computer CAN skip gears. it preselects 5th because like i said it is most likely that is the gear you will need to shift into, but when you floor it, the transmission skips 5th and goes straight to 4th or 3rd, hence resulting in some hesitation.

i dont drive a manual because of the performance, i drive a manual because i love the better feel and interaction i have with the car.

Re - The DSG - You'll find that it will try and learn how you drive - if your wife drives very differently to the way you do it can be an annoying few trips until it works out how you drive.

I'm not sure if this works on the Golf - But try using a different key when you drive - I know my car has different settings (radio, aircon, throttle control etc) for each key and you might find the golf does the same, including DSG aggressiveness.

It can do so only by going through neutral first.

No, it preselects 5th because it's the only gear that can be preselected. The DSG has only 2 clutches and hence can only preselect the next or the following gear. In 1st it always has 2nd preselected. In 6th it always has 5th preselected. In other gears, it uses it's smarts, anaylists of angle of incline/decline and previous driving history to make a decision what to preselct.

The hesitation is not because it hasn't preselected the gear and/or hasn't anticipated a massive demand (although it probably hadn't), it's because it's physically impossible for the DSG to change from an Odd gear to an Odd gear or an Even to an Even without first completely dissengaging the engine from the driveline (or switching through the intermediate gear) - the one circumstance it can't seemlessly transfer power without dissengaging the engine.

I think perhaps you are missunderstanding how the DSG is built.

You are right about driving differently. My wife drives very conservatively (I think that's the best way to describe it). For me that's fine as it's her Golf GT.

This is not a car I would buy or drive myself as I am a AWD Turbo Clutch Dumping Manual sort and likely always will be. We have two sets of keys for what it's worth.

Perhaps VW could come up with a system like the preset electric seats where you tell the car it's YOU about to drive it and it then gets itself ready - suspension setting, seat settings, steering wheel setting, radio station and all - while you put on your seatbelt. If not via your pre programmed key, then a password ....OMG where will it end? Just enjoy the drive.

All that said, I'm driving a GT with satnav, leather, bi-xenons, bla bla bla for a few days and have it in D and sometimes use the paddles to + and -. It's fun watching the boost needle fly back & forth acrooss the dial.
