Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 1.6 TDI "leaking" EGR COOLER

My 2009 Jetta has been losing engine coolant, slowly for about 20,000 ks since I noticed it.
Last week at its 90,000 ks (VW Workshop) service it was diagnosed as a leaking EGR Cooler which would put the missing coolant into the exhaust.
The EGR Cooler is about to be replaced under warranty.
Have now idea what is involved except that the car is needed for a full day.
Anyone familiar that might have suggestions as to "what extra might be a good thing to have done" whilst it is at this stage of taken apart-sludge cleanout, maybe?
Imagine a warranty job , on the house so to speak would probably mean no extras apart from just replacing the defective cooler??
    Any comments?

They will replace everything necessary, as part of replacing the EGR cooler.

If it's not part of the procedure, it doesn't get touched.

      WAAH !
7 hours in the workshop and a new EGR Cooler (replaced under warranty)
and its still leaking coolant-slowly . Worshop checked it out and presssure tested the radiator and found it ok and "no external leaks"
Guess its back to the workshop. Anyone out there had a similar problem? Any ideas?

How long since it was done?

The coolant might still need bleeding.

Bleeding? Was done 6 days and approx 1,000 ks ago.
When I got it back from the workshop I noticed the reservoir level was about 2 cm above the "waist" and now about the same
          distance below it.
Watching it closely to see if it stops dropping further.

Bleeding as in bleeding the air out of the system. This is normal.

Keep an eye on it. If it keeps dropping, take the car back, and have them pressure test it again.
