Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Very New to VW cars

I'm thinking of getting a Golf Gti(mkv) but was wondering which side of the steering wheel is the indicator stalk. I have been driving Japanese cars since i got my license and i understand euorpean cars have the stalk on the opposite side of Japanese cars. Is this true on the golf.

    Thanks

yep most euro cars have it on the left.
Its not the end of the world. You get used to it.

Left side - But yeah it doesn't take long to get used to.

I've noticed some Korean cars now have it on the left hand side too - Either to seem european or to appeal to the european market??

Left-hand indicator stalk is no biggie! I used to drive Japanese cars too before I climbed into a VW, and yes it's very easy to get used to.
        Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
        Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Yes as confirmed, vw's indicator stalk is on the left as all cars that come from europe are and from my knowledge correct me if im wrong it is because of the left hand drive thing.

I jump in and out of cars all the time which have them on the left and right side and you get used to it sometimes its like oh bugger windscreen wipers at first haha but yea only takes a few corners to get ya brain to adapt to it.

            Cheers

Thats true, koreans drive on the wrong side of the road like the americans, probably adopted the culture since the world war, just becuz the americans were their biggest ally. Be an proper asian I say !! and drive like the british

Anyways, which ever side is no worries, first few days your windows will be cleaner than usual if you know what I mean

              Welcome to to forum mate.

It took me about 3 months to get used to the left side stalk...

I've always wondered though, why euro brands dont move it to the right for aus-based cars?? Since the stalk would be on the outside of the car in a LHD vehicle? Do I make any sense?

if you drive an auto it makes no difference whatsoever. if you drive manual your left arm will be busy but its no biggy.

I get confused because I'm in and out of left and right hand indicators and it does annoy me.

The worst is the sequential shift, for one up is up and the other up is down. Confusing yep. I wish there was a standard for this.

I stopped driving with the sequential shift in the other cars, so as not to make that one mistake in my car.

yes sequential shift is very frustrating! when i gun it in 1st and want to shift to second, i always pull down because thats the direction when you're driving a manual, then i end up redlining it and going nowhere really fast

I also jump from car to car, I find I've adjusted to the VW set up so tend to operate wipers rather than blinkers in other cars!

When I was test driving a Jetta I also experienced the gearshift issue, my Falcon operated the other way around so when I went to grab the next gear up in the Jetta, she went down a gear...she certainly grabbed some revs......was happy the salesman was not with me!

(Another good reason not to buy a demo!)

                              Cheers
