  • New GTI climate control

I picked up my new blue graphite GTI a few weeks ago and have noticed that the air con is crap.. Im in Townsville and it hasn't really gotten hot yet.. and the air con struggles to keep cool.
I spoke to my dealer and he says its as good as they get...but I'm not convinced.
Anyone else have dramas with theirs?
I've read on a few other forums that vw has had dramas etc..

Also on start up theres a weird rattle noise.. again dealer says they all do it?
engine makes no other weird noises when running just on start up..

any input from anyone would be great thanks..

    Scott

mk5's do sound a bit like a diesel on startup, i've been told that it is normal. As for the AC, i cant really comment, other than in the passat it doesnt seem quite as cold as in my Vr6....

aircon in my mk5 takes a minute or so to blow out all the hot air from the pipes before it gets frosty

my new mk5 gti aircon is able to keep the car cool but even when u just set it to full "hi" setting it doesnt blow chilly air out. But the car after a few minutes does get comfortable. so seems to work well. i just think its how the system is though. Just quietly goes about its job of bringing the temp in the car down

Although sometimes i wish it was more like my old crummydores aircon that almost blew icecubes out the vents at you. At least for the first bit. The problem with that car was it was hard to get the temp comfy. it was either too cold or too hot.

and yes my GTI sounds horrible on startup. Ive heard its cos the fuel system pressure is so high on the FSI engines. makes them sound a bit agricultural

I find the aircon in the Jetta just fine. It doesn't seem to blow heaps of really cold air, but I just set the temp at 22 degrees and it gets nice and comfortable and that includes those 40 plus days we had last summer.

            Cheers

I'd tint the buggery out of it.

With the Climate control I've found that if you leave the top vent (in the middle of the dash) open, most of the air goes to trying to keep the windscreen cool.

To cool the car down quickly, I turn that off for the first 5 minutes.

If the aircon isn't keeping you comfortable there is a problem. Having said that, it is a very different air con system to my previous cars (Falcons) which were not climate control air cons if that makes sense.

                  Cheers

What ever you do. DO NOT COME TO CAIRNS to get WESTCO to look at your car they have to be the worst Dealer in Australia!!!

I now drive the 700km trip round down to get all work done on my car.

I had a few issues with my car when it was delivered. i.e. polish stains on the seat covers and B pillar took 8 Months for them to get the parts in. with me calling 2 times per week they just keep on fobbing me off. until i took them to small claims court. when the parts just happened to turn up 3 days before court.

Second of all, a friend who has the same car Jetta 2L TDI. Was charged $127 for 6L of oil in his service. when i purchased the oil in a 5L bottle from the service dept. it cost $68. we both went back with both recipes and asked questions they refunded his money. but who knows what else they are over charging for!!!!

All i can say is avoid them like the plague!!

check the recirculate button is on/off ie: whether it is drawing the air from outside or reciculating the already cool air inside.
i have noticed on startup it defaults setting back to drawing air from outside but after it begins to cool you should select recirculate

I almost thought I had the diesel version with the noise it was making just idling. More than my old V6.

My air-con seems fine, and keeps me quite comfortable. Just make sure the economy button isn't switched on, that will dramatically dampen the a/c's ability. Check the climate control temperature selection is adjusted properly to your desired temp.

Also look at the vents you may not be using, i.e. glove box vent is off, backseats are down or off and windscreen is down or off. Plus tinting will help keep the heat out.

Good points - the "econ" button basically turns of the compressor so all you are getting is fan. I've got mine darkest legal tint, but even in Brisbane it still takes a while to cool...

Gotta say the wife's Accord Euro cools down quicker.

yeah doesn't seem to cool unless you turn that top dash vent off, then its
                            like ice hitting you.

The draw back of air con was my economy went from 5.1 to 6.2 per 100 km.

                              climate controls

Over the years as a technician it has always obvious that cars ( all makes..not just VW) fitted with climate control were never as cold as ones fitted with just a/c button .Who knows why? The other stupid thing is that cars fitted with cl/cont the system shuts down when the outside air temp reaches 100f or 38c. In the 80s I worked with m/benz & when the first cliimate control models came thruogh from the factory we had a workshop full of new cars with 'faulty' a/conds. It turned that when the outside temp reached 38c the system closed down. My old Falcon(au)model had the best a/c Ive ever experienced. Nowadays I run a mk5 Golf 1.9 diesel & the air works fine so far. I do use the circ button every time thou. Bazz
