  • buying a car interstate

As mentioned in the thread title. I am considering going down to melbourne from sydney to purchase a golf. I have never done this. Too be honest, wouldnt have a clue whats involved ,e.g fee's and paperwork required.

Has anyone done this before, if they have can they let me know how hard is it and is it costly?

    THANKS!

Good luck with the purchase. This might be a good site to start off with.

Transfer a registered vehicle in another person's name : VicRoads

Although the information contained is mainly to do with people who are living in Victoria and buying a Victorian Registered car. You may have to source some information from the NSW equivalent of VicRoads (which is RTA I believe?) Put the two sources together and see what comes out.

I did this last year when buying a car for my daughter from Valley Motor Auctions in Newcastle. Had a local mechanic (friend of a friend) check the car out, called the previous owner to ask a few questions about the car and that was enough to convince me it would be a good buy.

We flew up from Melbourne and were met by the friend at the airport with the car, then drove it all the way home. We then had 4 weeks to get a roadworthy and swap it over to VIC reg, which we did without too much hassle. The messiest thing for us was returning the NSW plates to RTA for a refund of the remaining rego and CTP.

The process is very similar in all states but for peace of mind I'd suggest calling RTA and/or searching their website to see what you have to do, as there's some VIC Roads paperwork you'll no doubt need to produce to clear up any ownership issues.

Bottom line is that it is no doubt done all the time and without too much difficulty - just make sure the vehicle has current rego and get a cover note for it before you go to pick it up. Otherwise check out how much it would be to get it transported from Melb to Syd as it would be the cheapest transport route in Australia and should only cost you a little more that flying down and driving it back.......

I've bought interstate a couple of times.

If you're buying from Vic you should be taking into account that a roadworthy certificate can't be used in NSW, so you should request the cost of this to be removed (about $120 give or take). The amount of Vic registration left is also a value that the seller may have factored into the price (12 months reg is about $500 give or take depending where you live) which will be of no use to you.

Some things to think about if you get to the haggling stage!

It's a bit different for me as i live in SA, but i had no issues buying2/3 of my cars so far from NSW, one i had shipped, and reasonably cheap too(3 years ago), for $250(TOLL i believe). and had no issues with wither on my end or the NSW end of getting the remainder of the rego back.
All in all for me personally it was an easy process
          Good luck with everything though.

I used Private Fleet to buy my MY07 GT when SA had just the one VW dealership.

They found me the colour & spec I wanted and arranged the whole thing for a $4600 saving from the local stealer's price.
I had the choice of pick-up or tray top delivery to my door.
I chose to collect it myself and drive it back up to Adelaide from Melbourne.

They did a great job and the whole exercise was very painless.
They arranged a temporary permit for me to drive home plate-less.
The only slight annoyance was the compulsory Motor Vehicles check before registering it locally, but that was a pretty small impost considering the savings.
Got factory mats and tinting thrown in as well.

            I'd do it again.
