  • Would you buy a DSG out of warranty?

    Hi everyone,

I have put a deposit on a 2006 Jetta 2.0T FSI DSG with 115k on the clock, just under $12k. I think I got a great deal as everything is in immaculate condition inside and out, and has been well maintained.

My question is: Even if it is in great condition, is it too greater risk to buy a car with a DSG gearbox?

There are millions of DSGs in circulation worldwide and most of them are fine. If it drives well, has been serviced by the book and your pre-purchase inspection is all clear, can't think of anything to stop you. There's always risk associated with buying a car (new or used) so just go for it

      I would.

There's plenty of info and know-how out there now, and parts and tools are very easily obtainable at good prices.

Any car is a risk out of warranty, has it got a service history?
Sounds like a good buy, my cousins 06 GTI has 150,000 kms on the DSG and it's still fine ( he has no mechanical sympathy lol).
Just do it, keep it in good mechanical repair and it will give you many happy years of motoring.
        Good luck dude......

I'd go for it as well, I was in the same predicament this time last year but I went ahead and picked up a 08 R32 DSG for a song. Since I've had it, it's been a dream.

That is very cheap for such a nice Jetta,I would go for it if I had the choice...

Not if it was given to me for free. I would rather take a Lada Niva that a VW with DSG that is out of warranty...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm pretty excited about it.

After looking on here and other forums, it seems that the anti-DSG folks are a vocal minority. No doubt there are/have been some issues with them, but I think they have been blown out of proportion.

Hopefully I am not one of the minority of people who have issues.

Make sure you test drive it thoroughly...

Chances are if it's done 115,000km without any DSG issues, it will be fine. But you can make sure by just test driving it in stop-start traffic, especially over hills, and get a feel of the DSG. You do get a little over-paranoid if you read through all of the DSG threads, but the reality is while the problem is wider than it should be, it still is just a minority.

Picking her up tonight! I am confident I have gotten myself a fantastic deal on a fantastic car. Wish me luck! (shall have to hit up the Jetta owner's thread later!)

Reflex silver with leather and sunroof.

I was considering Mazda3 and Golf originally as a downsize from my vz Commodore Berlina which was my second car. Ended up spotting a jetta at a good price and am very pleased so far.

I am now looking at getting an aux. in installed. Not so keen on pulling her apart myself so I guess I need to find myself someone with a bit of experience.

I am not biased or anything, but Reflex Silver is the best Jetta 5 colour...

Personally I wouldn't, but given you got it at such a cheap price, it's definitely worth the risk.
