It's funny, two weeks ago I would have agreed wholeheartedly with this statement (I've never had an auto in my life), but as fate would have it, the dealer only had the DSG version for me to test drive. After 10 minutes using the F1 style paddle shift, you can't help but be impressed - the changes are so fast and smooth!

Even after driving the DSG version, I was still being quite stubborn and refusing to buy an 'auto', until a few of mates told me to "get with the times" and pointed out to me that aside from V8 Supercars, almost every racing category on earth has done away with the stick shifter. I love my motorsport, and the closer I can get to the race car driving experience (I regularly pretend I'm Marcus Gronholm), the better.

However, I still wasn't completely won over, and then wife pointed out that if I got the DSG, that she would be able to drive the car (she's not real flash with a clutch and shifter). One could argue that this is a bad thing, but we go on regular long trips away, and it will be great to share the driving duties.

I won't know whether I've made the right decision until I take delivery of the car, but my short test drive was enough for me to know that I won't be too disappointed either way.

[/B]]Sorry but am going to have to disagree with you there Mr Vdub, after driving both a manual and DSG, why would one buy a manual gearbox anymore? The DSG gearbox drives like a manual anyways especially when in sport mode or using manual shift either thru paddles on the steering wheel or using the shifter. If you were thinking of buying a VW i'd have to say if it comes with a DSG option then its not an 'option'. The differences between manual and auto gearboxes are no longer, least where the DSG box is concerned, I ask this how many times when sitting in heavy traffic on a hilly piece of road has one thought to themselves gee be nice to have an auto!! I still do it now whilst hill starting for the 50th time. Least when I'm lucky enough to get delivery of mine I'll have the choice to cruise around in auto or when going for a drive be able to have a stack of fun as if I was driving a manual. [/B]

i dont think there is a right or wrong choice. its all about personal preference.

I just find i miss not having a clutch personally. So non of these automatic shifting boxes really cut it as you just dont have full control. It also dulls the art of driving. Half the fun of taking to a nice twisty road is fishing thru the gears. But then again. That wont help you if your car is mainly used on a commute to work and back in traffic. but yeah. each to their own!

Agree with you there on personal choice Tim, definately!! Hey we are not communists!! To me an auto makes sense, esp the DSG as you can use it as a daily driver and come weekends you can fish around thru the gears with it. but i hear ya, if you want the manual good luck to you and have buckets of fun. just pointing out that the traditional differences between auto and manual no longer exists. well to me anyways, i know there'll probably me a few out there who'll never see it that way but hey whatever floats ya boat!![/B]

IMO an important reason to not buy the DSG is because of its limited torque handling without modifications.

If I had a GT TDI I would be chipping it quicksmart (Who can argue with 150kw and 450+Nm torque?!) and the DSG versions are all limited to 380Nm torque.

i agree. after driving a dsg tdi since end of jan this year, i still MUCH prefer a manual. the dsg has these avanatages:
1 it has the responsiveness of a manual
2 it has the power/performance of a manual
                        3 you can shift up/down
4 the wifies can drive it (good or bad, its upto you )

but it also has these downsides
                        1 it is computer controlled
2 you cant drop it into 3rd to power around a corner past redlin e
                        3 you cant skip gears
4 it doesnt feel like a manual

after driving the dsg for 20000kms and a manual for most of my life i still believe the manual is better and i cant wait for the delivery of my manual gt sport tdi. although for ppl with wives, or who cant be bothered with clutches anymore i can totally understand the dsg option. we'll both be bloody happy with our dubs putty road anyone when we get delivery of them?

                          manual gt tdi

When I test drove the dsg I thought it was pretty cool with the paddle shift and so on, now that I have got my manual gearbox the dsg dos'nt come close to it for fun and strenght. Any way I don't commute in it my gt is used for open road driving mostly, Gunna take it down to National Pk today and try it out in the twisties.
