  • Put a V8 in my R32

Well, I've just come back from a few spins around Albert Park Lake after installing a Mod shack VTDA and can i say what a great improvement.

Now let me begin by saying that I'm no grease monkey , however the install was VERY easy.
All up it took no less than 15 minutes to setup.

Here's a link for the install

A big thanks to Ian at Rennenhaus for supplying the CAI.

The note of the car REALLY does sound like a V8 now, with a low burble from about 2K RPM and then opens up to sound a lovely throatie resonation (are these the right words ?)

Am i the only one or does the flapper sound a bit raspy?

    Of course it feels faster!

Anyway cant wait for my Koni/Neuspeeds to be delievered!! Yehh

nice one and if you own the mk5 r32 then i would say that the flapper does sound a bit tinny . . . get a straight through 3inch!

You've done the two minute flapper mod, right? Does make a reasonable difference down low....

That airbox looks sorta like an alloy version of the BMC CDA (Carbon Dynamic Airbox) But a a quarter of the price!

Basically you "disable" the flapper in the exhaust.

To summarise though, there is a flapper valve in the LHS (As you look at it from the back) exhaust pipe that is vacuum operated. Due to european noise laws this stays shut at lower revs (below 4500RPM), I and many others have stopped the vacuum by various methods (the most popular is to pull the pipe off and stick a screw in it.)

There's some supposition that this give a couple of extra HP down low though I doubt it. What it DOES do is make the engine sound brilliant as the exhaust is now open all of the time so you don;t have to be above 4500RPM to enjoy it.

Great thing is that it's easily reversible if you so choose (it can be a little drony at highway speeds).

ive thought about doing this mod to my R.. but decided against it... when your just cruzing or dont want to be noticed it does a great job, still a nice purr... when you need the power..it opens... thats when you want that sweet sweet sound....
              mario.

Went and read a bit more about it last night, before going and disconnecting my flapper last night. Does sound good but I can see what you mean about the drone.

Am thinking about fitting the mod shack next. Saw Ian's at the German Autofest and was impressed.

I think he's got a blue VTDA still in stock - so if you want DBP give him a call - I'm waiting for his next shipment as I want either gloss black or CF.

                    Mmmm.
Apparently there's a wide world shortage of CF (?) so you may have to chose another finish.
Also may i add that while the supplied setup while very easy to install , me thinks it could be a little bit better.
By that i mean i will be adding a 90 degree pipe bend in the rear of the fitting so it points directly towards the original air vent in the grill.
I'll post pics as soon as i fit it.

I was thinking along those lines, possibly with something like the VF Airbox or similar to give some protection from engine bay heat to the air going into the VTDA.

I'd be interested to see the 90 degree mod when you do it. I saw the "world shortage of CF" thing - I think that I may be partly responsible with my purchases from Ian alone
