Aftermarket Xenon ERROR

Hey folks,
I have a MY07 golf 2.0 FSI. These never came with xenons even as an optional extra.
Recently fitted in some headlights taken from TRGTI's 07 GTI. They have aftermarket 6000k HID kit in them.

We tried to find the option under VAGCOM to tell my car that it had xenons. Couldn't find it anywhere??? Do I need to upgrade my gateway or something?

The problem is big since now I always drive with 1 headlight on. If I stop the car and turn it off, then turns lights off, put on accessory, turn lights on, then turn car back on ....3/10 times it works.

Any idea how to fix?

Doesn't sound good and something to be mindful of.

Yeah my retrofitted OEM Xenons behaved weirdly until I changed the coding with VCDS. It must limit the current or something. I don't remember where exactly the setting was but it was it wasn't hard to find on my car.

Can you give us some specs on the headlamps and HID kit that went in?

You can upgrade the CECM (Central Electronic Control) Module - this controls the cars electronics, including the option for xenons. not all cars CECM module can use xenons - so vag-com coding will not be there as an option.
You need to tell the CECM that there is a lower Powered Bulb - H7 is 55W and HID's 35W, otherwise the CECM will throw a bulb out error and reduces the power to the headlight - and hence HID lights can flicker or turn off.

If this HID kit is aftermarket and added to headlights then you can buy a CAN-BUS error free module to plug in before th HID headlights - basically a load module that makes the car CECM see 55W lights rather than 35 watt HID's.
If you stick in a 55W HID kit then you should not see a problem as the power consumed is equivalent to the Halogen H7 bulb.

If there after market are you sure they integrate into the vehicles electrics of are they just bulbs??

yes I've read the Ross-tech wiki. I'm aware what happens when It's not coded properly, but the option isn't there in my car, as it was never available with xenons.
Dunno which brand HID kit is in there, just 6000k kit into OEM GTI headlights (The ones with smoked lens and black inside) Note my original headlights are the silver chrome ones. These have been removed.

@Gigitt: I'll have to look into this, thanks. hopefully won't cost me too much. How do I go about finding the right one that will work with these lights? (CAN-BUS error free module)

@grtuned: They for sure have to work, it's a kit, not just bulbs. The wiring should be fine, if it wasn't then I don't think they would work sometimes, and not other times. Not much I can take pics off unless I remove them again (cbf taking apart the front end of car again)

I am wondering if there is a way to long code it in VCDS? If I run an error scan to locate the error, then change the coding? Or any way to make my car ignore the error?

Aftermarket HID Kits are NOT factory plug and pray.
Yes they come with all wiring, ballast and bulbs - but for us Euro cars with Can-Bus that monitor wiring amp load you need to trick the CECM into thingkin you have 55W lights - Note normal HIDs' are 35W although you can get 55W ones.

Sounds like you have normal Halogen headlights (GTI/GLI Spec black chrome) with an aftermarket HID Kin installed.

Your cheapest option is to put in a Error Free CAN-BUS box between the headlight harness and the HID Kit.

I thought I'd post this so others can understand what is going on... Note I do not endorse HID's in reflectors.

You can also search for 'canbus canceller' in ebay - same thing but do not know the quality compared to Morimoto unit.

(1) I can only lead you in a driection of what I know how to do things... you will need to verify what has been done to your car.

Background for Mk5 headlights:
normal Halogen Bulb is H7 for both High and Low beam.
In Most car headlights with H7 Bulbs, they are held in place with a metal wire clip and the wiring connector pushes onto the back of the H7 Bulb itself.
In a Mk5 Golf/Jetta the High beams have clips, but not the low beams.
Low Beam H7 bulbs are held in place with a Bulb holder. The builbs are push into the holder then the holder is twisted into place.
The bulb holder contains metal tabs that click into the reflector housing to get power - now there is no wire plug on the back of the bulb like the high beams.

So now here is Mk5 Halogen Headlight to HID aftermareket upgrade info:
You need to get a aftermarket HID kit with H7 bulbs... but you also need to get a special Mk5 Golf/Jetta Bulb Holder.
If you check out ebay and look for VW Golf HID Kits - there are not many Kits specifically for Mk5 Golf/Jetta as they need this holder.
But you can buy these bulb holder seperately... looky here ebay (h7 hid golf | eBay) so you can see what I mean.

Ok So how to these hook up to you Mk5 Headlights... these bulb holder allow the HID bulb and wires to poke through the hole in the middle.
The bulb holders still has metal contacts to get power from the factory wires on the back of the relector, but on the back of the bulb holder there are Power Tabs/connectors you you can plug in the HID balast to get the power.

Ok Now to your problem - you need to add the Can Bus error free harness thingy.
This connects between the Bulb Holder and the Ballast... so you unplug the power wires from the bulb holders and connect them to the Can Bus error free device, then plug the can buss error free device wires to the bulb holders.

So which to buy.. I would presume you would buy the H7 version.
If you are going to get some thing like this... then you have to contact them and ask it this will fit.
Hence my 1st comment (1) - you will have to confirm what you have is as I have described above - or did the person before fitting the HID kit do a dodgey job.

I bought the warning cancellers, and they fit perfectly. Although still the same issue. Only one headlight will come on at a time, they vary between which one it is.
Is there ANYTHING i can do with VCDS? Maybe run checking for errors...then once identified, have a look and disable a 'cold check diagnostic?' (I'm guessing there isn't such an option for headlights though) Or am I back to square one...I do not understand why this isn't working still
