Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Advisable to get a Golf after warranty?

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking into getting a used Mk5 TDI or GTI.

Would you buy a used Mk5 out of warranty?

Whirlpool have a strong opinion about Golfs being a money pit once they start to break down esp. the DSG. I don't mind driving the manual version.

    Thanks.

It's probably like other brands. Just get it checked before you buy it. Check the history as well.

I have had a MkV Turbo Jetta with DSG and I have not had any problems with it at all. The DSG is still silky smooth to date. I called up the Volkswagen service center where the car was serviced before I purchased it and got all the information about its service history. The car is an absolutely pleasure to drive and do not have any regret purchasing it!

This is probably one downside to using forums as the driving factor for information when looking to buy a second-hand car. Generally all you hear is people complaining when something goes wrong and hence, the fear factor increases for everyone else. VW have sold millions of DSG Golfs, Jettas etc. and the majority of them run fine. As Transporter pointed out, just get a really good pre-purchase inspection done by a VW specialist prior to purchasing and that will help in your decision.
