Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Why does my clutch keep f***ing up!

I apologise for my language but this is the most frustrating thing I've ever been through with my car. I've got a 2005 golf gti.

If you all remember awhile ago I posted saying there was something wrong with my clutch, it wasnt retracting properly.. Well ended up been the slave cylinder as the car has done 100,000 I decided since the car yard was paying for that part and labour I may as well change the clutch also.. purchased a luk clutch for $385

Took it to get done, 4 days later I picked the car up drove fine for the first few hours then the pedal started sticking and twice when I excellerated the car made a horrible screaming noise after a few days it got much worse making the car jolt nearly bunny hop the day I was taking it back to the mechanic I was driving on a highway and I couldn't put the car into gear!!!! It wouldn't go! So I took it back to the mechanic he kept it for another 3 days and I picked it up 3 days ago and the clutch is still doing the same thing but I can feel the pedal is grinding also and it's really crunchy to put the car into gear!!! To top things off I was in a busy car park just then had the car in 1st gear and my foot flat on the clutch and it stalled - happened 3 times!!! And now it's SO HARD to put it into first gear!

Called the car yard told him that i want to take it to another mechanic and he basically said his done his bit and paid for it his not paying for anything else!

Car is still under dealer warranty also!

    Thoughts? Advice?

If it was under warranty why were you paying someone to replace the clutch ?
3-4 days to replace a clutch is crazy, where did you find this mechanic
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

Because the clutch wasn't due to be changed.. I changed it so in a year when it's due to be changed I didn't have to pay for labour.. The slave cydlinder was the problem.

It's the car yards chosen mechanic!

      How long should it take?

Is the car yards's mechanic a VW specialist or any hack mechanic? You should only ever have work done by dealer or VW specialist. You'd want to get on this v quickly as your warranty may well be voided by VW if it hasn't been worked on properly.

          Mmm a hack I suppose.

There is no vw warranty it's an 05 model.

I'm taking it to a Vw specialist mechanic tomorrow to see what he thinks.. I'm going to call department of fair trading too.

I'll take a stab and say that the master cylinder has failed in sympathy.

I've seen it before on a few Golf 5s. Since then, I've replaced both at the same time.

I was thinking Master Cylinder too.
Yep, contact Fair Trading (which I think has taken over from the MVRIC thank goodness. The mechanic has to warrant his labour as well as the parts he supplied. Also, the car yard still has to make good their faulty vehicle as they haven't fixed the original problem.

The biggest issue is that you have to give them the opportunity to do so, so going elsewhere before seeking advice might hurt your claim.

              GL with it all.

How much is a master cylinder worth?

Yeah I know, it's so frustrating but! Maybe third time lucky?

I'm scared the gearbox is going.

The part is $80-$100 delivered from the UK on ebay. Not sure what it is in Australia - probably $200ish from an independant & $300ish from VWAU.

Umai Naa will know how long it takes but I'd bank on 1-1.5hrs.
