  • Oil top up query

Apologies in advance for being a complete noob. I'm getting into the car world slowly. I had a pre-purchase inspection on my Jetta(MK5 2006, DSG) done a few weeks back prior to my 3 month statutory dealership warranty running out. He said I'd picked a peach of a car (Which made me smile) but that my oil needed a top up. Is it ok to just add new oil to older oil?

I know there are some threads here about the best oil to use, I just wanted to know if it was OK to just buy some and poor it in..... Seems silly, but I can't afford to break anything.

    Thanks everyone.

It's fine to top up old oil with new oil. Just ensure that the oil that you buy has VW APPROVAL. Somewhere in your user's manual there is a list of oil types that you have to use in your motor. It'll say something like VW 507 (in my case. Double check with your car since mine is a diesel and yours may be a petrol) which is like an approved specification.

Go to your local auto store and find an oil that has VW approval to whatever specification you require.

The important part is "APPROVED" It must say APPROVED and not "Made to" or "Exceeds" VW specification.

The fellows behind the counter should be able to help but when you have selected an oil, look on the labels for the approvals section. It will list the specifications to which it is approved (e.g. VW 507 or porsche or Mercedes, etc, etc, etc)

Obviously, it's not OK to just keep topping up. The car does need an oil and filter change every 10,000-15,000km!

      I've got a 2006 Jetta as well.

You'll need to get a VW approved oil with 504/507 specs.

For top ups between services I'm using a Shell Helix Ultra 0W30. This is available at REPCO stores in 5 L bottles. Full price around $85.

I think there is a Penrite product available there also. The guys ehind the counter should be able to steer you in the correct direction.

REPCO tend to have specials and discounts for customers with NRMA/RACV/RAA/RACQ members.

DO NOT skimp on oil for your VW baby!

For your car (110 kW 2.0 FSI) you can use either a 502/505 oil or a 504/507 oil.

504/507 oil is not mandatory, but personally, I prefer it anyway.

          It's 5W-30, not 0W-30. Supercheap has it for $75.

Penrite Envrio+ 5W-30 is also 504/507 approved, if you can find it.

              My bad.

Quite correct on both counts. Damn I knew I should have unlocked the garage last night to check the container.

              Cheers

Good oil. I do most of my own mechanical work and this is what I use.

As others have said, if you intend on changing your oil more frequently, just go with a 502/505 oil. They're a bit cheaper.

I change mine every 6 months anyway and always use the Shell 507 oil.

Suggest you get one of those ECS Tuning metal oil tanks as the plastic OEM ones are rubbish and you can easily crack them when you pull out and replace the filter. That'll lead to a drip drip drip of oil that will drive you slowly mad.

guarantee I wont be replacing the filter, so all I have to do is poor it in for a top up! I did it last night with the Shell. Only needed to put in about 1 litre, so it will last me a few top ups which is OK for $75.
