  • Anyone replaced brake pads

    Hi All,

I've read some threads about the horrible brake dust. Personally i'm sick of cleaning it off.

I'm interested know if anyone has replaced their pads and whether it has reduced the dust and by how much? Also what type/brand of pad people have used?
I'm not overly concerned about the having quite the same level of performance (experience and knowledge from the motor industry indicates some drop off) as wife and I are not hard drivers but more interested in rotor longevity and asthetics!

    Any feedback welcome please.

Go to your local autobarn and get a can of Autoglym Alloy Wheel Seal.

Clean your wheels real good and use the product as per the instructions. Best stuff i've used, works a treat on the 18's on dads passat.

EBC Green pads give good performance & 50 - 70% less dust (they use kevlar as a binding material instead of carbon - )

They are kind to stock rotors as well.

Look at different brands at Motortraders or simillar parts store. Take pads out of box and go by colour - lighter materials will give less dust. But be worned your stoping distance may be longer and they don't have to last longer.

The real question is not about the brake pads but how soft and easily wearable are the rotors, i know that if you change the pads to a harder compund in the bmw's lets just say that next you change your pads, you will be chaging the rotors as well!!

            Guy,

Are you speaking from experience? If so on what vehicle and did it increase/reduce rotor wear. And if you have used what is an indicative cost?

As general rule European cars have soft rotors and they get replaced with the brake pads every time. Set of two rotors for BMW cost less than brake pads. MB Vito re. rotors $ 30.00 each hove does it compare to Holden Commodore?

Yes, we have used plenty, probably 300 sets over the last 10 years! - A couple of Audi & VW dealers use them in their workshops up here when people complain of brake dust.

Theres some info & stockists listed here: http://www.ebcbrakes.com.au/

Dont know the cost - a guess would be $120 for rears - $200 - $250 for fronts (Guess only!)

Well thank you for the feedback Folks. Ive bought some wheel seal ($22 from Repco) as this seems to be a cost effective option 1st up so I'll give it a go. Now just gotta get the Jetta from the GLW, give it a clean and treat the rims. Hopefully it will make some difference.

However I'm still concerned about the amount of rotor wear after 27k. There is a 0.5mm (there abouts) lip on the edge of both front rotors indicating wear.
Does anyone know the life expectancy from front rotors and pads on MkV's?

Also any ideas of cost? My boss has a horror story on the cost of replacements for his 2000 Passat 1.8T. All 4 pads & rotors over $1,000. Is this right for OE from a dealer's service Dept.

only $1000? Tell him to get a GT-P Falcon. Brembo pads and rotors from ford come in a $2900.

                        The price is riht,
you can use DBA brand rotors, if they make them they will last you longer than OEM's.

                          Thanks T5.

Well, I've seen the bosses invoice and just over the $1,000 for brakes. BUT I reckon it was a bit rude to charge a separate hour's labour for the pads when they charged for labour to replace the rotors as well.
                          1 hr replace front rotors
                          1 hr replace rear rotors
                          1 hr replace pads.
Maybe I'm off the mark but I would have thought that pads would have been incorporated into the time replacing the rotors.
Anyhow it seems his rotors where originals that had done 125,000km and pads were aftermaket that did not have the sensor connections.
Maybe I won't have to be too concerned about longevity of rotors on the jetta after all. Can't wait for the weekend to clean the wheels and give the Autoglym wheel seal ago!

Yes, that is very rude to char.ge twice for one job (basicaly).
I always recommend DBA brake discs, since they last longer. Also Japanese cars have brake discs, that last long time without that lip forming at the top.

Well folks, I got the car from the missus and given the wheels a good clean and treated with 2 coats of Autoglym (thanks BlackVr6ix for the recommendation) and appears to work pretty well. Very wet yesterday and water appeared to be repelled also. Hopefully after a week of driving they'll still retain some of the shine.

How is everyone else coping with the brake dust?
