  • MKV Jetta Scraping/Screeching/Grinding Rear right wheel

Just happened all of a sudden, came out of a bunnings car park, and about 50 metres down the road I thought my rear bumped fell off, sounded like i was dragging a washing machine behind my car.

I pulled over and got my passenger to drive and reverse slowly with my ear up close to the wheel and the sound is 100% coming from the rear right wheel. Its not the brakes because it only happens when moving.

After some research I have come to the conclusion it has to be the wheel bearing grinding.

I booked in to a mechanic Friday morning to get the Wheel bearing replaced.. will keep this updated if it fixes it.

Hey there.... know this sounds silly.... but... try this...
accelerate up to about 50 kmh and brake HARD......
there is the possibility you have a small stone lodged between the pad and disc... It happened to me years ago and IIRC with this car... lol
I rang the VW help line and that is what they suggested... it cleared the problem.

Hehe thanks for that, I ended up just taking the wheel off and the brakes apart and what do you know, a little b*tch rock was stuck between the caliper and the disc.. thank god it didnt do much damage.. Thanks for that mate

no probs... have had it happen once in the time i owned it... still a mystery to me as to how it ended up in there in the first place as i was driving through a shopping centre car park.. so no gravel etc... but i spose its easy to kick up a stone that you cant see on the road.
glad it ended up being something simple...

Same thing here. Except it was a small screw from the calipers that had come loose and fallen in between the rotor and the inside protection plate. I cant believe how loud it was! I think everyone in the street thought my wheel was going to come off!

          Glad you sorted it!

Had the same problem myself except I was on a dirt road. Tried to get up to speed .. no go .. popped into reverse and it must have flung that sucker out!

This is one really useful thing to know. Not happened to me, but i would also tend to the paranoid if i heard it. Makes perfect sense to try to back out whatever is causing it, thanks for sharing it round. A no-tools fix, just up my alley
