  • Dead GTI....

My GTI died this morning. It all started with an intermittent missfire about 3 kms from home and got worse. When I went to drive it into the workshop it popped a fuse which I replaced. When I turned the ignition on smoke poured from no.1 coilpack and this is what I have found...
With show week this week I am working at getting it going with the local dealers and when they can replace the loom, then they are welcome to it!!!
It melted the plug for the coil pack which is major work to rectify.
    Damn electics!

Sorry to hear of your probs Andrew, not what you would expect in a fairly new car is it? Hope you can get it fixed with minimal inconvenience.

            Cheers

Yeah is a bit of a worry when you type "Coil Pack" in google the first results are to do with VW coil pack issues

Hope it doesnt take too much heartache to get sorted!

Geez they finally got the 1.8T coilpacks right a few years ago and now they're having the same issues with the TFSI?!

Thanks guys for the kind words. It was lucky it happened locally and not on a drive in the country. The loom plug is burnt out badly and I might be able to jury rig that with a new coil pack, supplied under warranty. That will get me going again temporarily until a loom comes in, I hope.
I am going to push for 4 new coil packs as well. This car is 1 week off 2 years old now so I hope it isnt a sign of the future for the Mk5s as it would cost a lot to repair out of warranty.
Absolutely no symptons were present beforehand and if it happened out in the middle of no where well, it would have stopped when the fuse blew. It certainly puts a bad taste in your mouth when you think of what could have happened, had it have been on the Hume Highway or whereever. Major inconvenience.....
                  Thanks again fellas, Andrew

yeah mine is getting on for 2 and half years old...havent had any issues at all so far and i have done a crapload of Kms but i must admit im a bit worried about this sort of stuff happening out of Warranty (which isnt that far off), its getting retired to weekend warrior in the near future so will be getting less use but that doesnt stop a coil pack blowing or something. DSG box is my main concern.

Bummer Andrew - hope it all works out OK. Let us know how the dealer treats you.

I know what you mean about the sour taste thing. That was eventually what persuaded us to trade the Alfa - in the end I was just waiting for the next thing to go wrong - something like that destroys one's confidence in a car.

If this issue continues with coil packs I might investigate the warranty extension on ours.

BTW - roughly how much would it cost to repair outside of warranty?

Thanks Splashalot, I think the coil packs might be around $90 each. Not sure. The wiring loom would be many hundreds of dollars and it looks like the worst thing to change. I suppose that a modification could be made to it to reconnect to the pack. The 4 plugs in the loom for the packs are in a hard plastic holder. I will try and get some pics of it mate. The wiring on these Golfs dont have any slack in them to cut and join. To replace the loom would take a few hours to replace I think.
I hope its not off the road for too long. Golfworx is visiting on saturday week.
I get along pretty well with the dealers here. Not sure how many customers I have sent in there that have bought new VWs. Would be a heck of a lot though!

Thanks Minigolf. The parts will arrive tomorrow and the terminal plug is available. I am not sure what is involved with changing it as the wires are very short. I would rather fix it here than leave it at the dealers but if the wiring and loom are too tricky, then it will go in as soon as they have time.
I will "jury rig" it until they can do it.

That's no good at all Andrew.

VW & BM all seem to have coil pack trouble, even from the very early day's of individual coil pack's.

The BM one's would never do that though. The early one's would cook & split the plastic casing. Looked like no more gap's!

I don't reckon the wiring look would be that complicated to replace, just a pain in the arse. I hope that it hasn't done anymore damage further down the line like a ECU etc.

You haven't had any crazy rain down your way lately have you?

                              Extended warranty without question.

I've been told of a few people with the DSG's that come end of warantee, trade in time.

I'd hate to get a $17+K bill to replace & fit a new DSG!
