Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Dont forget the cheaper on going servicing costs.. Having said that, when im tired I do find the manual box in the GTI a little tiring, its like rowing a boat.

I think if you're buying second hand then DSG is a large risk as its still new technology by gearbox standards, give it another 5 years and I might be convinced.

CVT cant be compared to DSG, they are such opposite ends of technology. The CVT box is not built for performance, its much smoother but so much more boring and just as unreliable. Hence why its in FWD low powered Audi's and nothing of a sporty nature.

Just to add a bit of balance to the debate I've got a DSG in the Mk5 with 273000kms of flawless operation and will likely never own another manual box again.

$2k for the part seems reasonable until you compare it to a DSG from the UK, +/-GBP350; freight isn't that expensive.

You could buy an arse end write off an part it out.

As I mentioned in another thread, have had two DSG VW's, replaced mech units on both, neither time because it was an actual issue, just because I could. The next car will be DSG as well.

Outside warranty, I'd never own a VW, manual or DSG. They (VW's) are built to fail but damn they give you a lot of fun for the cash in the meantime.

If I had to rebuild a DSG outside warranty and VW goodwill repair was not an option (I've used it before) I'd do what some have said - non-dealer options.

I find it annoying that more and more manufacturers are selling sports oriented vehicles with DSG only. Also it seems that because it's relatively new tech, problems cost a premium to fix. And in Paulc1964au's colleague's case, they're recommending swapping it out. surely they are as repairable as any other manual or auto 'box?
I'll be sticking to manual thanks.
