  • Worn camshaft and stuffed Fuel Pump

Had the car serviced on Monday and I asked them to check something out. Well it turns into something bigger than ben hur!!! Turns out the camshaft lobes have been worn down, and the fuel pump is shot!! Not happy!! To fix, $3,000 and that is with a family discount. Anyone heard of stuffed camshaft? Our car is below on the sig. Car has only done 74k. Waiting on VW Aus to see if they'll come to the party. Really annoyed. And it's not even a diesel!!! Heard about their problems.

Not unheard of problem. The lobes had something wrong with the hardening process. I saw a cam and follower on ebay the other day. Both new, the guy bought them from the states and then found out his car already had the revised parts fitted.

New pumps are pretty pricey though I believe.

Its not the cam that causes the problem, its the cam follower that wears through then the pump plunger eats away the cam till its flat causing your knock knock knock. Unfortunatey then its too late. Yes there is a revised cam and follower. 05/06 more prone for the fault. Seen a couple now. One i sent back after its warranty period and it was covered, didnt get into the conversation i only diagnosed it, but the noisy wheel gets the oil !

      Cheers

If it helps "thezoneR32" ours sounded like there was a diesel engine under the bonnet rather than the 2 litre GTI motor. Once you were going though, it sounded fine. I could only tell when idling. If it is a known fault then I hope VW come to the party seeing as though as was built in October 2005. Will let you all know what happens.

Thats exactly what mine sounds like! Like a diesel when its idling. Oh well I bought the new cam b from the ebay link above just in case. Was only $125! May aswell get the cam follower and upgraded hpfp and get em all done at once. thanks for the link Gav!

Don't panic GTI owners you lot... All Mk5 GTI's make a tap tap tap tap sound on idle, it's the injectors. You should hear the noise the RS4 injectors make.

The cam follower issue is genuine though, and it's a real problem for those who don't check them for 10's of thousands of kays.. It's a 10 min job and the replacement part is really cheap.. Just do it and be happy...
