  • What to look out for in 2nd hand Jetta

Hi all, I'm looking at a 2007 tdi dsg Jetta thats got 100k on the clock, are there diesel specific issues I should be looking out for? Anything else I should be wary of? I don't want to drive 90mins to find out its a lemon...
    Cheers

Good luck,I had the non diesel, non turbo Jetta, and it was great.

Generally feel Jettas are slightly nicer than Golfs,as they have more standard equipment, and represent better value for money.

With those km's I'd be checking the logbooks to see if the timing belt had been done. If not, there is $1500 shortly to come.

where abouts is the car? i know a bloke who services the brisbane area - full car inspection for about $170. that includes engine, body, drivetrain, etc.. excellent value for peace of mind, if you're not sure what you're looking at.

It's from an ad on carsales, here's the address in the email I recieved: Pickles Auctions 2069 Sandgate Road Virginia QLD 4014.

My problem is my current car decided to give up the ghost and I've been off work thurs/fri trying to fix it, looks like I wont have it going by wednesday, (some electrical gremlins) so I might have to bite the bullet and get a car loan. Which means not much time to look at vehicles.

            give this guy a call:
            AISQ - Home

pickles should also be able to provide a vehicle report if you want to know what sort of general condition it is in (dints/scratches, tyre depth, etc).

Well pickles got back to me, its got 94000km on it and is due for its 90000km service, no idea what that one involves. I'm a bit dissapointed they'd sell it needing a service straight away. It'd be good if I could talk them down in price or get them to do the service for the same price...

IMO I would get it serviced from a VW specialist and get the cam belt and DSG done at the same time. Less grief and peace of mind for the next 100,000 km

Good advice, but bare in mind you'll be up for $1500-2500+ depending where you take it.

Personally, I would stay away from this car.

Well, depends what they're selling it for. If you can haggle them down a coupla grand, it might be worth it and use the money saved to get it serviced.

Check its history [i.e. where it was serviced]. When i purchased by Jetta, I called the VW dealer which sold it originally [it is also where the original owner serviced the vehicle] and had them check what was in the log book and what matched on their systems. All check out fine. Excellent service departments still exist!

agree...when I got my Jetta, I was able to obtain full service records from the dealership to match the book entries. Unfortunately, records dont show how a car has been treated when driven or other problems of neglect

yes, like how long it will be before the DSG fails. I was all excited about my purchase but after being on these forums I've come to regret my purchase as I feel destined that I'll be up for a $5k repair bill WHEN (not if according to most) it fails.

If it's a DSG and outside the warranty period, RUN AWAY FAST, or start saving for when it fails all together!! Either way, I wouldn't touch it.
