  • Furl Leak from Tank

    Hi All,

When I have filled the car twice up with fuel, it has been leaking somewhere from where you put the fuel in to where it meets the tank. Last night after filling it up (my wife guarantees once it clicked once she stopped on both occasions) and the car got home, over about a 2hr period I collected approx 100mL of fuel. After you drive it for about 50km the dripping stops until you fill it up again. This has only happened over the last 3 weeks.

As a priority I quickly took it to VW this morning for diagnosis and they have quoted approx 6 hrs to take off the axle, sub-frame and take out the tank and have a look. Worst case scenario would be a replacement tank ex Sydney at a total cost of $2240, best case it may be a breather tube.

Antone seen or heard of this problem before???

I haven't actually seen the setup, but before spending that sort of money I'd be taking out the interior trim on that side and having a good look.

As you probably know, petrol expands as it warms up after being stored in a cold underground tank, so the leak should be above the click-off level, may very well be just a breather tube and, with luck, you might even fix it yourself.

I've often seen older cars parked at the kerb (left-hand fillers, of course, VW's are RH, so this shouldn't happen) spewing petrol out of an overflow for this reason.
