  • 36hrs with new GTI

Picked up my GTI yesterday morning and have driven it for about 400kms

Half of that was coming back from Shepparton to Melbourne.. but the other half was cruising all over the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Quick observations from the last 36 hours:

    1. The car is great and fulfil all my expectations of what a GTI should go, feel and sounds. No regret whatsoever getting this instead of Mini Cooper S. Straight after picking-it up; was disappointed with how muted/polite the exhaust note was. After driving it a couple of hours.. began to realise that it actually sounds much louder outside than inside (e.g. windows down). Above 3000rpm though is when it starts to really sing..

    2. Few rattles that seem to come and go in certain road speed and when pumping out the stereos with relatively loud bass; there are some rattle from the left door. Nothing major though.

    3. Fuel economy is excellent for the performance you're getting. My other car is a 1.8 Astra. GTI isn't much worse off than the Astra. Averaging 8.9l/100kms for the last 400kms or so.

    4. Clutch is light and easy to use, steering and gearshift are all a pleasure to use around town and in heavy traffic. Much less work than a Mini Cooper S I have to say.

    5. Handling is very good with slight 'softness' just off-centre. Coming from a garden variety (but lotus-tuned suspension) TS Astra; I expect the GTI to be much sharper in terms of steering feel. Maybe this is to do with the EPS instead of the more conservative hydraulic on the Astra? No complaints though.. the whole handling/steering feel in GTI is certainly a spot-on dose of comfort/sporty set-up.

Overall I have to say I am very impressed with how the GTI works as a package and is such a nice place to sit and drive in no matter you're stuck in the traffic or carving the dandenongs.

Now I understand what all the fuss are about and why GTI is still the hot hatch to beat. VXR might look better, MPS might be faster, XR5 might handle better; but none of them make you happier to sit, drive and own (and yes, I've driven all of them). I feel privileged to be a part of this community.

    Cheers

Now here's the obligatory newbie question part:

    1. Anyone has the RCD 500 manual in pdf ? or point me on the web where can I get it. The car comes with the navi. system manual instead of the stock cd/tuner. I want to know what the 'TIM' settings are for under MENU -> SETUP. Also is there a pause button for the CD?

    2. There's no auto door locking after takeoff. Is this the default setting? brochure says programmable but through where? dealer visit? at cost? I don't have 'Convenience' on MFD because it's the Mid-line (split screen). I've read several threads on this forum that confused me whether this is possible. Please confirm that there is absolutely no way you can access Convenience menu if you have a mid-line computer.

    3. How do you take the light cover off the light on the vanity mirror? there's a bug/fly stuck in there (this is a country car, by the way..). Tried to pry it open several times but it wouldn't budge.. afraid I'll snap it.

    1. TIM is for overseas only (Traffic Info). No pause button, just hit the star on the steering wheel if you want to mute the stereo.

    2. No convenience menu in yours. By default, auto lock when driving off is set to off. Either VW have to do it for you, or buy a VAG-COM cable and the software and change all the settings yourself.

    3. Try doing a search on the VW Vortex forums or golfmkv.com forums about your vanity light cover.

glad you like your new dub

with the auto door lock, just get a dealer to do it, make a fuss if they try and charge you which they shouldnt

and about the fly, get them to take it out and again, make a big fuss if they wont do it for free because, why the hell should a fly get in there anyway.

          also, welcome to the forum!

Thanks everyone for your insights. Not too worried that much with the auto locking.. when I get a chance I'll drop by a VW dealer and I'll get them to have a look at it.

Drove it too work for the first time today and chicks seem to dig the white colour no complaints for me, obviously.

Called the Volkswagen Info line today from the number that I found on this forum.. regarding the 'Volkswagen Sound Package'.

Some of you who's as anal as me might notice that in late 2006 / 2007; VW has added in their GTI brochure / website a description of 'Volkswagen Sound Package; (250W amp, 10 speakers, 8-channel, 6-stacker). I also have the 'original' GTI brochure from Volkswagen Australia dated early 2005. This does not have the abovementioned 'Volkswagen Sound Package'. It only says: '10-speaker and 6 in-dash changer'.

I am REALLY curious whether the 2005 GTIs (like mine) also has the 250W amp.. or whether this is just a recent addition for late 2006-onwards.

One thing I noticed is that with the 10-speaker / GTI the head unit is slightly different; having the 'Middle' tone adjustment under Setup. My cousin's GT TSI (June 2007) only has 'Bass' & 'Treble'; and 8-speakers from what the brochure says. Although on the rear doors there are also 2 speaker grilles just like the GTI. Not sure whether there is an actual driver inside though. I figure they might miss out on the mid-range driver / tweeter for the rear door.

Comparing the two sound systems though; mine (GTI) definitely sounds richer with more prominent mid-range and wider soundstage. Pity about my rattle on the front left door trim (I need to constantly press it). Might need a dab of glue or something. Any recommendations on this? I assume that rattles is out of the warranty scope

No.. it's a very early example (build: Jan 2005). Hence the mid-line MFD.

Hahaha nope.. I didn't get any maps. A free Melway would be good. All the manuals were printed in Germany though..

Thanks if you could do that; that would be great. Also if yours is a manual; is your footrest aluminium as well? I've seen few press shots (from VW Aust & overseas) on early GTIs showing aluminium footrest. Mine isn't.

I dont think we got any with the metal footrest, not sure why, the press shots might have been overseas as I inquired about this when i got mine, you can get them if you want though aftermarket.

There are a fair few differences between 2005 and newer models...nothing too major i dont think though. Like DSG has grill intakes, different AC controls..i will try and dig out a list..i have one somewhere..

rattles are most certainly a warranty issue
