  • Volkswagen ceramic brakes?

I was guy checking out the r32s on carsales and noticed one that was recently listed said it had Volkswagen ceramic compound brake pads and discs as a performance feature. I can't seem to find anything on these, even on google. Would anyone be able to shed some light on them?

Cheers, so they're not an official VAG option?

        sorry, cant answer that one.

I do know Audi offered ceramics on the RS4, but at $30k I would find it hard to imagine them offering ceramics on a VW. However, his advert does say VW installed them?

Give the owner a call and ask him for more details

ATE makes Ceramic brake pads for most of the later VAG cars, ATE is OEM for VW. The main feature of them is "no dust"They have 3 years/50,000km warranty if you have them fitted with the new rotors, also there should be no wear to the rotors since the ceramic from the pads transfers to the surface of the rotor, so the rotors should last +200,000km. I fitted them already a few Golfs and Skoda. Also testing them on our Tiguan and after 2weeks of driving we have clean wheels.

Those of you in Adelaide, I can fit them as I have them in the stock now.

Yeah, he told me that they were a no dust system, and were a ceramic compound that VAG offered when he went to replace his discs and rotors.

ah so it seems these are for dust purposes, but not for enhanced braking like traditional ceramic brakes?

Either way, they look pretty good in the pic on carsales

Yep, they're a lot different to a properly designed carbon-ceramic brake system. Not to mention way, way less expensive.

Though I suspect the rotors aren't carbon-ceramic - unless he actually spent the near equivalent of 20% of the car's RRP value (or more) just upgrading his brakes!

The difference you are talking about is the actual rotor being a carbon ceramic compound and as mentioned, with the drive-away new price of the R32 being just double the cost of a full, carbon ceramic braking setup on a porsche 911, not exacty cost feasible.

Ceramic pads have been around for a fair while, Hawk is another brand that manufacture them. The trade-off between bite vs. dust is negligable on them.

Nice ride too gareth, my dream car, the RS4

I'm pleased with the results; clean wheels, the same or better pedal feel and the brake discs should not need replacing for some 200,000km, at least that's what some reports.

ATE Ceramic pads installed day 1

                        2 weeks 450km later

I will not wash them for 2 months to see how clean they stay, but so far only dust I can see is the same dust and dirt as on the rest of the car, we also had some rain in Adelaide in the past 2 weeks.

Man, that's so much better than the crazy black stuff the stock pads give off (although I do actually think the stock pads are a great product). Transporter, I reckon I'll be getting you to put a set of these on for me in 10k or so time when my stockies need doing!

Well, wife parked under the trees and I had to wash the car yesterday. The wheels were very clean, no black dust and I just washed them with the high pressure cleaner.

                            After wash

Finally, I don't have to use the sponge or brush on the wheels.

Impressive. How does the cost of the pads compare to oem?
