  • Hi from the FNG - few *post searching* comments / questions :-)

    Hi, rocking site.

About to become a VW owner (silver golf 2.0 TDI DSG) for the first time in a few weeks -and while I've never had kids, I reckon the anticipation could be similar.

Is it going to be o.k, are there any genetic flaws, how long will the bugger live before dying, what sort of stuff can I buy to spoil it, will my family and friends think its good looking...

So I've been searching away on this site and others... and here are my leftover questions and some comments:

    1) Tinting - Wondering what options to short-list .... The top line ICT film the dealer is offering looks O.K (was able to source the shop the dealership uses - to do it direct would cost 1/3 what the dealer is asking) After talking with those fellas today, they were encouraging me to a 20% tint, saying that's what most of the VW employees/family members get when they get a new car. Only hiccup is that it isnt' legal on the front two windows, yet they'll still do it

In short, I noticed you guys had a lot of pics of your cars, and was curious if you had any suggestions for tint that would go well with the silver color, and what made you happy? Realize beauty is relative, but any suggestions to consider would help me narrow this down.

    2) Fog Lights - The car doesn't have them, at the time of my order I didn't enter that in my criteria. In hindsight I want them, so rolled into the dealer to ask them to add them on as an option. They informed me its a factory build, not a dealer modification.

So is there any 3rd party shop in Melbourne that would be able to integrate a pair of foglights for a reasonable splash of cash?

    3) Performance Modifications - I've seen a lot referencing these sites:

In short it looks like a software change to this ECU would bring it up to 124 kw and 380'ish on torque. Sounds appealing, few questions..

    A) At what point in the break-in process would this be recomended? (after x-amout kilos following a regimented break-in, etc.)

    B) Any reasons -not- to do it besides cost or potential warranty issues? -- IE, any bad experiences...

    C) If this is just a software modification, and no physical components are trading hands, why the heck have I seen prices for almost $2,000? Is there a guy in his garage at home who will do it for less?

I think that covers my nagging questions right now!

appreciate whatever time or input you can lend on any of the above

    cheers,

    Lunar1

      Hi Lunar1.
I would not install a chip in VW car. If something would happened to DSG or engine it'd be easy for the dealer to pick it up. Even with my VAG COM tool I can see how many times was my EDC programed (no. of programing attemts).
Golf DSG transmission is not build for more than 380Nm torque.
So I'd be careful in there.

Enjoy the driving of your new pride and joy.

i think you'll find that several of the aftermarket chip companies (not naming names) actually reset the flash counter upon completion of the upgrade....

TMTuning (www.tmtuning.com) will ship you the fogs plus the switch/wiring harness for the Golf Fog Lights for about $285USD right now.

Ive had the APR tune for over 2 years and 90,000 kms.....most dealerships are sensible when it comes to tuning and warranties and most just want to drive the thing!! i know 2 people that have had turbo units replaced under warranty with ECU tuned cars. Yeah there is a risk but with the amount of people doing it these days, its a calculated risk...do it!

Also...there is no "installing" of any chip...its software

Some are $2000 ish...but there are a lot of options around these days which is great, there is no need to pay that much, you can get a trial reflash with a few of them (APR, GIAC i know do) so thats probably the best bet. See what suits you best.

                  Thanks for the hearty welcome!

What / who is APR tuning? Couldn't correlate the acronym

Also, with the fog light kit - I know how to put gas in a car, check/add fluids, MAYBE on a good day, change a fuse... beyond that! So really looking to pay someone to do it right.

Did see someone started a Tint Thread, that was handy.

                  Cheers!
