  • New Windscreen replacement - mk6 fit mk5?

Hi all. I need to replace my front windscreen on my mk5 comfortline with the rain and light sensor.
    1. Will the mk6 windscreen be suitable? I have heard it is quieter and 'better' than the mk5?
    2. Does it matter if it is genuine VW OEM, or aftermarket?
I have not contacted the insurer yet, as I don't know if I need to ring around for quotes, and I'd like to know about the 2 questions above.

Thanks for your advice and guidance.

    1. Use the original glass intended for your vehicle. The noise difference is extremely negligible.
    2. You need to use Genuine VW glass, if you use after market, you won't guarantee fit/finish/water sealing. Moreover, the genuine glass comes with the fitments for the rain/light sensor to pop back into.

Contact a few nearby dealers and find out who they use for glass replacements, as they'll be using genuine VW parts more than likely sourced from the dealer. I've seen a lot of windscreen replacements go fairly terribly when non-genuine parts are used. Avoid.

Also the Vw windscreen is heat reflective , if you have glass cover it wont cost any more .

        Thank you Mythik, Ian.
        1. Stick with genuine glass (tick)
        2. Not worth putting the mk6 windscreen in
        I've heard ONLY the mk6 is heat reflective...the mk5 is not. Yes/No?

Prices I've seen on the forums and found today that prices fluctuate a great deal.

Ian, thank you. I shall relay that tomorrow. Appreciated. My Golf is 06, but VIN has it 07. I've learned VW get the parts by using the VIN.

It will be an out of pocket expense, not insurance which is why I'm seeking best price (& service). Hopefully the sensor can be reused.

              .
FWIW I've had the screen replaced in the Jetta with an O'briens, through insurance. No problems, no difference, fit, finish and water sealing no different and same noise. If anything the glass is tougher and doesn't sand blast as easy as the genuine article. One no claim replacement per year is cheap compared to paying outright!

              Cheers

O'briens called back with a much better price/package. ...essentialonly because it was out-of-pocket and not insurance. I contacted the local VW guys and they were fantastic about understanding that I would not go ahead with them. They were very reasonable with great service and knowledge too. I ended up with the BLUE tint GTi type screen. Thank you to all for the help along the way.

GTI (Blue tint-not green) Windscreen cost $446. The sensor still works. Green screen was $398 (from recollection). O'Briens at Underwood. VERY nice workshop too. When I got there, they had both screens laid out on trelleses to make it easy to choose tint. Nice they even thought of offering a choice. These prices were best prices btw. Certainly not RRP or initial quotes (both of which considerably more).
