  • engine swap for a mk5?

my 2nd timing belt change is coming up, so I'm looking at around 1500 for that and a service
so why should i just throw a new engine in instead???

does anyone know the technical info for doing an engine conversion in a mk5,

for example theres a 147kw tsi on ebay for 2k, and is open to offers, theres also a tdi 103kw same engine as mine has for the same money

would it drop into the car, mate up to the 6spd manual, and need a new ecu and away i go? could the ecu be reprogrammed to accept a petrol engine? i would get a custom exhaust done with is as the old exhaust probably wouldn't work either,

am i digging a huge hole by even considering this? or is it simpler than it sounds?

you might end up with a new engine that also needs a timing belt - or more
I would think that if you were swapping like for like then it would be straight forward, not sure about the ecu, i think yours would be immo3 check ross tech's site for that one.

My engine swap was straight forward on my mk4 (see my sig for link) but there were still issues and I wasnt doing anything very radical.

I would think a petrol engine needs a petrol ecu, so much is different - no spark in a diesel etc...

For a different engine e.g. diesel to petrol swap, some things to consider would include: engine mounts, exhaust, ecu, engine bay wiring, fuel filler, etc

I am sure it can be done - but really if you want petrol, you are better off buying one - by the time you get it all right the expense might be surprising.

A like for like swap would be easiest anything else would take more effort than it's worth IMO. And it would have to have a lot less k's to be worth it.

You could always just change the timing belt.....

    good luck

Timing belt and major service for $1500 is pretty good.

I'll echo Stan. It will be a world of pain changing an engine. Even if you went to a 125kw TDI from the GT it would be mental.

Be proud of your 220kms! I'm aiming for 300,000km on mine

There are a lot of differences diesel to petrol, that would be a major mod. A low km TDI would be the go, but yeah a whole VAG engine for $1500 sounds quite cheap - be a reason for that...

there is nothing wrong with 220,000km and a $1,500 belt change - i would suggest driving it as long as you can to get best value.

yeah ill stick with the engine i have and get the timing belt done ! the receipt for its last timing belt was only 1200 which isn't bad at all.
and if the day comes, which i don't think it will, ill replace it with another 103kw engine ( like for like)

custom dump pipe, cat and rear muffler removal here we come

ill leave engine swaps for the project kombi ill build in a few years
