Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Genuine iPod adapter stopped working.

Hi all. First post here. I've just been browsing this site and google trying to find answers but I'm getting pretty overwhelmed so I thought safer to ask.

A couple of years ago (if that) I had VW install an iPod adapter for my car. The connection was through my glove box. It recently stopped working all of a sudden. It just can't tell when there is an iPod plugged in. Nothing happens at all. I took the headunit out to see if there was a loose connection but there wasn't, so I'm not sure if its the cable or something else that is broken.

I had my car serviced the other day (not through VW) and asked them to take a look but they couldn't see anything obviously wrong and didn't have parts to test with.

I can't afford to go back to VW so I'm after other options. Can I buy a new cable or kit somewhere? I've seen a bunch on eBay but I'm not sure if they're suited to my car/headunit. Should I replace the VW adapter entirely and go for something else?

    My headunit looks like this:

My car is an '06 Golf TDI.

I found this through another thread in this forum, but again I'm not sure if this is what I'm after although the connector at the end is the same as the one I have now.

Any help/options/links would be much appreciated.

My ipod cable stopped working too, but it was because the cable was in the centre bin, not the glove box, and it kept having to bend each time I connected the ipod. The wires ended up snapping due to the constant friction. I'm not sure if thats what happened to yours, but have a good look at the cable itself to see if there is any damage.

Did you update your ipod/iphone software at all? Sometimes upgrading that can cause these things to stop working! Otherwise it could be a break in the cable as Declanny said...

I would say it is a software issue. I had the same problem with an iPhone and Touch some time ago. My solution was to drag out the old iPod Classic and use that... but it is a pain!!!

We had ours replaced under warranty. Dealer said it wasnt the cable, although that's a tad manky from being put away in lumps, there beig no retractor on the cable. I cant recall what the diagnosis was, but it may be worth asking for a dealer diagnosis before chucking it.
