2007 Golf GT - Blown manual gearbox

Hi all,

My cousins GT has just blown a gearbox, something has come loose inside and has torn a massive hole in it.



She's in Melbourne. Unfortunately it's out of warranty.

Any ideas where to source the cheapest second hand box in Melbourne? And any idea of a rough price?

Thanks for all your help. Would it be worth chasing up VW? I've never dealt with them so not sure if they would help.

I know there are a few guys on here who could help source a suitable part, just depends how quickly you want it. Off the top of my head I'd try Matt - Golf Loon from Camden in the sponsor section. Can't really tell from the tiny pic, but it looks like the clutch area that has gone, and damaged the bell housing, perhaps the gearbox itself is OK.

How far out of warranty is it? VW might help if it's only just gone out of warranty...
From experience, sourcing another box is hard and expensive. I'd be going down the route of finding a reputable transmission specialist and asking nicely for their input, if you can find out what part has failed (if it's a gear or what not) then you could order that part from overseas and get them to fit it.

Depending on where you're located you could try Volkspower in Burwood, Volkewerke in Greensborough or Deutsche Auto Union in Oakleigh (just off the top of my head).

What caused damage??? Have the cv joints been replaced in the past??
Any work done in past relating to that area??

I agree Jimmy. Definitely sounds like a diff failure. It is very disappointing that this is still happening to the new gearboxes too. I think it is well worth a try to get a warranty claim. Even if they agree to a proportion of the cost. I would be getting in contact with the Dept. of Fair Trade I think it is. Even though it is out of warranty goods have to be of a marketable quality. If you can show that the car has been adequately serviced and the cause it not due to misuse then I think you would have a valid claim to get VW to pay most of the cost.

Don't agree that golf 5 diffs have similar issue to golf 4 models.
