Depends who you talk to? Its a topic which has devided the forum.
Some people say 105 or 5yrs others say 120 or 5yrs. The book says 120 but the dealers say 105 ( they claim the service manual was revised). I went with 105 just to be safe.
Does anyone know if any Jetta's have had isssues with the timing belt before the scheduled 105k or 120k km's?? Mines approaching 71k and I am deciding whether to do it now or wait for the scheduled change..

Yes, but it's an 07 model which means that your timing belt (which is made of rubber remember) has been exposed to the elements for almost 5 years, regardless of the lower km you've done. As the timing belt lowers in quality it becomes more brittle and is more likely to snap, which if that happens is really bad news.
If it was me, I'd be getting the belt and the water pump done (they get done together) at your soonest service.

its a 07/07 build, so probably last of the MYO7's. Definitely not a MY08..
My understanding of the schedules is that while yes, the newest schedule say 5 years, the older schedules recommended a 4 year change interval (the schedule that would have been current at the time of an '07 built car).
AFAIK they've made massive improvements in the quality of the belts in recent years, hence the move to 5 year intervals. But the belt fitted to an '07 may not be quite as good. I only say because mines a July '07 built too and my mechanic suggested I change it now at the 4 year mark but told me I should need to change the new one quite so soon as the quality of the belt was better.

I do wonder about the age thing....... it isn't that hard to remove the cover & inspect the belt for flaws.
While it's a totally different operating environment & the engine was a free-spinner (therefore no big deal if the belt broke), the timing belt in my Mk3.5 Cabrio was 9yrs old & had done ~130,000km when i traded it in. Still looked good on visual but no idea what the cords under the rubber were doing by then.

Not exactly related to GTI, but close enough. The life of the timing belts is longer than you think. I always suggest to my customers to replace the belt as per manufacturer recommendations but not later than 7-8 years.
I guess you really have to weigh up the burden of cost to replace the belt verses the burden of risk of replacing an engine.. I think i know which burden i would prefer.
I have just replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 07 Jetta turbo at 100,000km. The job was not as difficult as I was thought it would be. The old belt looked in excellent condition with no signs of deteriation or wear. I think it would have been good for at least another 50,000km. Just my opinion for what its worth and each car is different.
